This hike offers great views with overlooks. The trail is overgrown, which is not really a bother so long as you wear long pants/sleeves, but it becomes increasingly narrow and muddy as you reach the steeper part of the climb. The trailhead is hidden behind private property (you walk up parallel to a driveway with many keep out signs) and there is no trailhead parking, nor parking allowed in the similarly neighborhood. You will need to park a half mile down the hill from the trail in order to avoid being towed.

Very steep trail - I had to turn back! The first mile and a half or so is a fairly standard trail, but once you move up onto the ridge it gets very difficult to traverse. The trail is overgrown, which is not really a bother do long as you wear long panta/sleeves, but it becomes increasingly narrow and muddy as you reach the steeper part of the climb. I've done local trails with similarly steep inclines (like Poop Out Trail) but those were steep only for short sections, and looped so you do not have to go down that steep section. This trail, however, is in and out, and even scrambling on all fours I was sliding back downhill. Considering that the topo map indicated the trail would continue like that, and the fact that this would be even more difficult going down, I had to stop and turn around. I continued my hike on the lower trails, which are very nice considering how close you are to the city, but not quite worth diving out for, consisting you can find similar views/trails all along the foothills. The trailhead is hidden behind private property (you walk up parallel to a driveway with many keep out signs) and there is no trailhead parking, nor parking allowed in the similarly neighborhood. You will need to park a half mile down the hill from the trail in order to avoid being towed.

Wear long thick shirts and pants. The trail is very overgrown and you will have to walk through thorns, bushes, and even trees. I had to scramble at some parts because the steep trails were filled with just dirt and I had no footing - even less footing coming down. BUT the trail itself is very beautiful there is a lot of vegetation and a magnificent view all throughout. Come here for the solitude and the view.

Very steep and overgrown. Watch for rattle snakes. If you're planning to reach Rankin and Monrovia Peaks, be sure to start very early. No later than 7 AM.

Parking is by permit only past the trailhead entrance. I parked just before the trailhead... just watch for street cleaning signs. My goal was not to get to Clamshell PeaK , but to enjoy the Hillside Wilderness Preserve and I also got a fun trail surprise while doing so. As I stopped in the shade of a bend to take a sip of hiking juice, I heard some skittering noises behind me... and when I turned around, there was a deer about five feet away! After we both shared startled looks, it turned around and scampered back up the trail! This hike offers great views with overlooks and is mostly unshaded, so bring water. And if your goal is Clamshell Peak, you will have to wade through much overgrowth.
