Note: This trail is in the Coronado National Forest desert bighorn closure area, so between January 1 and April 30 it is prohibited to enter beyond 400 feet off designated Forest Service trails. Short but difficult hike with incredible mountaintop views. Definitely not for the amateur. Although short in distance, this hike will carry you up 2000 ft in no time. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended, you're venturing into serious ankle-breaking territory. However, if properly equipped, this hike will give you plenty to smile about as you scramble up onto 3 separate peaks before reaching your destination of Pusch Peak. As you start out, be sure and head down the trail on the left side, after about 500 yards you'll come to a fork in the trail, stay to the right on the "main trail". Once you get to the "mileage" marker look to your right (East) and you'll spot the trail leading you into the mountain range, otherwise, you'll end up making a big circle and winding up back at the trailhead. If your not up for a major hike this lower loop does just fine. A pair of climbing gloves is a big help as your going to be scrambling on boulders. Definitely intense, but well worth it, you're in for a stunning visual experience.

Dang! Hiked this intense trail yesterday with a couple of friends. It took us 4 hours and 15 minutes, meaning we averaged less than a mile an hour. Today, my upper body is as sore as my lower. If you go, be ready to take your time with it. The description says it's "serious ankle-breaking territory." I agree, especially descending. Even conscious of every step--finding secure, stable footholds (and handholds) at every step--I still fell once, as did one of my friends. Fortunately, we fell backward onto smooth trail, so no big deal. But serious injury is possible. Tough trail! Hiking poles would help. (We had none.) That said, the views are unbelievable. Also, be aware, this is not a designated forest service trail--a sign posted at the outside of the loop states so--meaning it is closed to hikers annually Jan. 1 through Apr. 30, for desert bighorn lambing. Avoid getting fined. Speaking of, we saw ample bighorn scat on the higher parts of the trail, some of it steaming fresh; never saw a sheep though. Anyway, if you're up for it, and if it's in season, this is a hike you don't want to miss.

Hiked Saturday 12/21 - Quite a nice hike! very rocky (with lots of loose rock). Significantly steeper halfway through and gets steeper as you go - gloves were definitely helpful. Sore knees on the way down because of how steep it is (so much elevation gain for only 7 miles!) but still fun! Lots of little side trails that cut off - I see some people laid down branches on those to help guide - that was helpful! Surprised by how little people there were on the trail - especially up to Pusch Peak, despite it being a Saturday (and I rolled in at noon!). Hung out at the peak for half an hour and had it to myself the whole time. That felt good! :) About 5 hours total, including time at the peak, quick water breaks and losing + finding the trail a couple times :)

Great trail, very steep with loose rocks and sand made the trip down pretty tough, wish I had brought a walking stick! Great view at the top!

Another great day on Pusch Peak trail. I left at 7:35 and it was shady the entire way up and about a third of the way back. Took me 1 hr 51 minutes to the top and that's with stopping 3 times for about 3 minutes a piece. Went through 1.5 liters of water. I always bring 2- 3 liters just in case. All trail says this is 3.7 round trip but when I used all trails when hiking it said 2.2 miles to the top and 4.7 round trip. I come back the exact same way so not sure what's up with that. only saw 4 people on the trail in that time frame. Views are awesome. Peter

Whew, I wasn't prepared for the uphill portion on this one...aka the entire thing haha. It was a great scramble up the canyon, but my legs got pretty tired and my pace slowed considerably so it took 2 hours to get up. Excellent views at the top at sunset, though I don't recommend down hiking in the dark (oops, got sunset and sunrise times confused!). Definitely bring snacks, that was needed on the way up to get my second wind.

Very hard. Intimidating on the descent because you’re just staring right down to the ground. Bad ass trail though.

A great trail. pay attention for some rocks stacked and sticks to guide your path. I would say the whole climb is hard but the very last part of the trail is particularly difficult, definitely very steep, it is HARD. Preferably do this trail early in the morning because if not, on the way down you will have the sun hitting your face most of the time. Also, this trail is extremely clean. We saw zero litter, only a small piece of glass. Took us about 2.5 hours to reach the top and 2 hours back down, with zero experience doing this kind of thing. Bring enough water and snacks. There is a lot of kind people on this trail.

Tough Trail! Took me just over 4 hours round trip. Descent was harder than than the climb. Great views at the top and glad I did it but not sure my knees would appreciate it if I did it again.

I hiked it last Sunday. One of my favorite hikes. I always leave early 6;30-7am so I have shade for over 3/4 s of the hike. bring lots of water and have really good boots. I also use hiking poles which are awesome for the down hill because there are a lot of loose rocks and dirt. it was different on the way down this time because there was a helicopter over head for about 45 minutes doing a bighorn count. kinda cool.

Did this trail on Sunday morning at 6 am. We started at the Hilton at the base, and from there it was 4 miles, so 8 total. Lots of climbing near the top, but the views are beautiful! Very easy to get lost coming down - by the time we found where we were going we finished up the entire 8 miles by noon. Take plenty of water - the sun sneaks up on you!

Hard. Started with a group of 5 and I was only one who made it. Round trip was 4hours flat and my average HR was 141 (according to iwatch). Also measured this as a 5.77 mile hike (.25 probably on summit). Leave early in the morning, once sun rises over the ridge it gets hot. Also, bring a lot of water- we ran out on the way down. Lots of rocks and be wary of cactus - parts of the trail become vary narrow. Views are worth it. But you will be tired and sore when done.
