NOTE: As of August 2019, the western/northern part of this loop is closed due to the Museum Fire. You can still access the eastern portion of the loop. Please check here for more information/updates: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd647113.pdf Spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff, Sunset Crater, Sedona, and more! The first 2.5 miles (Elden Lookout Trail) are the most strenuous- this route starts with them so they are out of the way. After topping Elden, continue on Sunset Ridge until the junction with Heart Trail, go left. Follow this trail to Schultz tank, where you can cool off in the water before hanging a right on Little Elden Trail to Christmas Tree Trail and back to the parking lot.

The sunset trails to the top were closed due to wild fire threat till October 2020, fatmans loop luckily is a turnoff to get you back

Super intense. WELL worth the climb. Take breaks if you need to; there’s no shame in catching your breath. It’s a steep climb.

The north side of the mountain was closed. Good hike. Old trail, with granite steps in some sections.
