Offline map is recommended. Users have reported that the trails are not marked well. The trail head is across from the parking lot and proceeds inland on a wide paved road. Go around the chain and go left at the fork (keep concrete hanger on your right). At the base of the ridge follow the trail as it switchbacks up the face. At the top there is a covered picnic bench. Continue inland and ascend fire road. When you reach a junction near an old fence line go right. You will pass a rusted water tank on the right. Enter the Kuaokala public hunting area. At the next junction turn left. Turn left when you reach the T junction. Pass a small water catchment and tank on the right. At the junction with the Kuaokala Trail bear right and slightly up to ridge rim. You will be overlooking the Makua Valley Military Training Area.

Amazing trail. Views of the valley on the west side of the island are incredible. Great trail the whole way. Would highly recommend.

Lots of shade and nice breeze. Worth it to make it all the way to the gate to peek around for a view to the west side.

It's been windy and rainy recently and has affected the trail. Ended up not going the whole way due to these concerns.

Found this hike by accident as we drove the west side of Oahu. What a great find . Challenging hike with great views of the ocean! We only did half the hike but will come back to finish the rest.

Def was a knee killer, amazing views until the picnic table at the first time waypoint, after that there are no more views until you get back 4 miles over the gate, after the gate at the top it gets sketch and you can easily loose track of the trail I went off once or twice myself and it requires you to use all fours to climb smaller parts, Stellar views beginning and end but an amazing workout if you want time grow calves and an ass lol

Beautiful view going up and at the top but very rocky and cut grass covering rocks made it a bit slippery at times. We took our 9 and 10 year old and although they slipped and fell on the moving rocks hidden under grass, they loved it!

This hike was definitely a beast with allot of cutbacks on the first 1/4 of the trail that takes you to the top by the picnic table. And the views are spectacular. it's what hiking in Hawaii is all about. Once you go up past the picnic table, the trail is a ruthless incline all the way to the Westside. I took my dog Lincoln on it and we went all the way which ended up actually being 8.4 miles round trip and of course he loved it. I enjoyed lots of juicy Guava along the way too. Feeling blessed

I'm really only rating the section behind Dillingham up to the picnic table. It's a great hike with quick elevation gain and beautiful views of the North Shore. I love this section, but as mentioned in other reviews, if you're looking for views of the Makua valley and leeward coast, start your hike on Kuaokala instead.

Great switchback trail on the North Shore. There are some sections with pretty ocean views, but it’s more of a hike you do to get in a good workout. Later in the day towards sunset is best as it gets pretty hot on the trail even in the morning.

9/28/2019-Started around 0800 and came across 22 hikers along the way with a couple of dogs. The parking lot had more than enough spaces available but it was already pretty hot and humid by the time we started hiking so would recommend starting earlier to avoid the heat. There were some fruit flies and yellow jackets on the trail but it was otherwise a relaxing outing. The muddy sections were minor but could be problematic if there’s a lot of rain the night before. Although the trail is shaded, sunscreen and at least 1L of water is recommended.

Finally made it to the official end of the Kealia Trail. Worth the sweatfest you’ll have gaining that much eleveation. Nice view of the Makua Valley.

Second time doing this hike. There were peacocks last time, saw none this go around. The last bit of the hike was over grown, at times it was difficult to know where the path was. The views, however, made up for these little inconveniences.
