NOTE: The Pu’u Pua’i Overlook side of this trail is CLOSED in order to protect the local Nēnē population. You can get to the Overlook from the nearby Devastation Trail parking lot. NOTE: the eruption site is closed off.

view is a bit obscured at the lookout.

The trail was closed right before the end of the lookout. I was so bugged they didn’t close it off before that so I knew I could never get to the end and see anything.

Paved trail with no real view. Go to the crater lake parking lot instead and find a longer trail.

Nice and easy trail to do with kids.

Great trail, paved and easy to walk. The big mounds of lava rock along the trail are really interesting. One downside is the trees are overgrown at the lookout point and you can’t really see the crater.

Very short easy trail, drop off at one trailhead and pick up at the other or do a round trip.

This trail leads you to another parking lot and the place of the eruption is roped off.

it's okay, I'd pick other trails at the national park instead

I enjoyed the sounds of the birds and the Hapu'u ferns. However, when you get to the overlook, it's so overgrown with trees that you cant see much of the crater.

It’s a tarmac trail so best for running and burning calories, also along the trail it’s birds chirping in the recovered forest or wind blowing in the “devastation” area

Quite a few birds. But the last part of the trail was closed today because of nene. Might have been the best segment

The viewpoint wasn’t accessible. Otherwise it’s a beautiful trail for a quick easy hike.

This trail is part of a series of trails around the park. This one provided different views of terrain, sometimes rocky, sometimes lush. Kids can do this one very easily. By following this trail, you can go down in to the crater and walk along the floor. We only went a little way along the floor before we turned around (it was raining), but we had a great time. Bring water and good hiking shoes.

The stark beauty is amazing. Don't expect anything lush. But it is beautiful and peaceful.

A very easy boardwalk over a volcanic cinder eruption of the 1950's. Surreal landscape!
