This is the route with a couple less than 500m missed turns from Castro-Urdiales to Liendo - close to Laredo in order to shorten the long distance listed in most Pilgrims resources. Recommended by a Gallego in Portugalete to us and mentioned with little detail in “The Northern Routes” guidebook. It is 95% on the highway, so be wary of fast moving traffic, and multiple stretches of road where there is no real shoulder. Be careful - but enjoy the distance saved and the amazing Albergue in Liendo that is quiet, clean, and includes laundry in the 8 Euro price.

Great trail but last mile is a challenge

The scenery was absolutely picturesque however the trails often times were not clearly marked and required a sure foot and technical abilities particularly at the peaks. This is a hard trail and not for everyone. But if you have an adventurous spirit, this could be your hike.

From the trailhead off the road there is a straight ascent through meadows and wood until your reach the 1st plateau above the tree line. At this point the views are quite spectacular. The trail becomes loose rock but well maintained as you ascend through the saddle which overlooks an open meadow at the basin on the far side. Clouds, then thunder, then rain set in and we turned back for cover. All and all, quite beautiful.

My children, ages 6 & 10 & 10, all boys, and I (Mom), loved this trail in May, 2019. It was paved and magical. We walked through a Rose Garden, stopped to play on the playground, saw cute ducks with a man made duck house village, climbed castle walls, looked out over the ocean, looked back at the town of Santander, looked out over the golf course, and then found a beautiful lighthouse! Gorgeous!

This is a pretty trail which loops from the town of Barcenillas to Laminas, via some small but beautiful waterfalls. The views of the mountains are really lovely. We parked at Barcenillas and came back via Laminas. There was some walking on the road at the end, but it is still pretty and worth it. Overall about 2.5 hour walk.

Pretty but hard climb all the way up to Treviso. Stunning views all over. Hot in august, but refreshments available in the Bar at Treviso.

Facil caminata con algunas cuestas empinadas sin mucha dificultad. Bonita vista!

We did the trail in reverse and really enjoyed it. The beginning is a little slow going through the forest but once you hit above the tree line it’s spectacular.

A lovely beachfront walk in Santander, Spain along the Playa del Sardinero to the headland park of Recinto de la Magdalena. Lovely ocean views and a beautiful park with a royal palace. A very easy stroll.

Did this trail a couple of times starting at the Tresviso end. There is a long section over loose stones “scree” which is not easy to negotiate, a walking stick or two would help a lot. The views are spectacular; but can be limited by low cloud. No facilities along the way, nor at the bottom; need to walk a further two km to Hermida for cafes and so on.

Walk around a coastal headland with spectacular sea views and a pretty palace thrown in.
