Good trail along the cliffs high above the sea. Medium difficulty unless you want to walk the whole thing. Has an interesting ruin in the middle. Much of the trail must have been a primitive road at one point.

Very peaceful trail. Great views of the cliffs and the ocean. There are towns in between that makes it perfect for a break. Took longer than expected. Viola was not swim able, the waves were too intense. All around a perfect way to spend the afternoon.

Beautiful trail, well maintained and not too steep. The terrain changes as you go and you get excellent views of the ocean, the town below, and Lake Fogo. Highly recommend!

Beautiful views of cliffs and ocean

Quite possibly the best trail we've hiked in São Miguel. In my opinion the current average of 4.2 doesn't make justice. It has a kind of enchanted valley with a waterfall near the ocean soon after the start. Another valley with benches and tables perfect to stop for snacks/drinks near the ocean. You can also visit the famous Poça Azul where I refreshed myself after such vigorous pace

This trail was epic. Must do on Sao Miguel - views at the top are sure to be incredible but we went during rainy season so it was muddy and the visibility wasn’t great but we loved the hike so much. Would do it again and will always remember it

Beautiful trail. Somewhat muddy and windy, but the view was worth it. If it’s cloudy when you get to the top, just wait a minute. The clouds change quickly!

This was a fantastic trail with beautiful views and very varied landscape. Nice and shaded for hot weather in the most part. Highly recommended.

Walked this trail 2 weeks ago. Like last poster, also missed the return to trail and ended downhill on paved road with the cows. Extra 4 km to get back to the parking. Was 30C and not a cloud; felt draining. But good day nonetheless.

As an alternative, you can also start in the middle at Lourais and go down to either Fajã dos Vimes or Fajã de São João. My wife and I went down to Faja de São João - took leisurely 1.5 hrs one way (taking pictures etc.) Great views along the coast when we went in late August many locals were harvesting and pressing the grapes. Also able to try some figs and blackberries along the trail. The path can accommodate 4x4 ATVs etc some parts were a bit steep and had loose rocks but nothing to worry about. Will do it again for sure. BTW amazing waterfalls as you enter the path after walking through Lourais! Heads up: we tried to get a cab from Topo/S. Antão/Calheta but the 5 we tried were in Velas and it would have been 30€ to get a ride back back vs 10-15€ so you might want to have that pre-arranged unless your planning to hike back up to Lourais.

As described here, this is a one way hike that would require transportation between the start by the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the end by the water in Maia. I just went down to the rocky shoreline and then back uphill on a slightly different route on a mix of pathways and streets. I could not successfully follow the trail as described on the official map, but made it back to my car none-the-less. People in the town were in the process of building floats on the back of trailers for an upcoming festival and I am sure they were amused by the sweaty tourist staggering up the town streets as I returned to my car. A warm summer afternoon may not have been the optimal time to do this trek, which was my least favorite of all the hikes I did on Sao Miguel. Admittedly, I no doubt missed some of the more scenic portions on the part running along the shoreline.

Had a great hike on this trail today. Started out around 11:00 AM because it was predicted to rain in the AM. We had planned on doing the loop and had no idea the lake side of the trail is closed because of a massive landslide. Looks like it wiped out a lot of the switchbacks so it will be closed a long time. Otherwise it is a nice hike with a great view of the lake at the top. If you look up from the lake road you can see the cut made by the landslide, to the left of the waterfall. I would rate the hike as moderate because of the steep hike up.
