I walked along the rail tracks to Chacahbamba (7.5km from Aguas Calientes - 104km) only to be told that I needed a ticket (and a guide!) to carry on up to Wayña Wayna. The woman at the check wouldn’t / couldn’t sell me one. Nice walk all the same, but double check first if you do actually require a ticket or not.

If you’re afraid of heights this trail is not for you! It is a steep and demanding trail consisting mostly of original stone Inca stairs. There are some extremely steep parts but overall it’s very doable. Very physically demanding on the way up. Altitude plays a role for sure!! But the views from this hike are unbeatable!!!

Moderate trail for the experienced. Short trek. Sun block, water and proper footwear. Trail is straightforward. just watch out for the buses! Trail, itself is kinda boring but worth the trek to see the historic Incan treasure.

Super steep, but only really difficult if you’re not acclimated to the altitude. Gorgeous lagoon at the top, one of my all time favourite treks. We were really lucky, went up late December and only met 4 other people at the top. It rained on our way down and got insanely muddy.

Highly recommend it. 1 day short Inca trail hike from KM 104 to Machu Picchu. Good trail with rest stops and markings. Very steep and lot of steps but great views and worth every bit of it.

Honestly, not many hikes in the world can top this one. Very steep climb, but the view is worth it!

Highly recommend this trek. Pretty short, but the incline is quite steep and challenging, which makes things fun! As an advanced trekker, I didn’t struggle too much, but most people opted out and took the mules up. Which was sad to see. Over populated for sure. It was a bit muddy, and I’d recommend trekking poles for the way down. The view at the top is breathtaking and insanely worth it. One of my favorite day treks by far.

Rewarding view at Huamantay Lagoon. It was starting rainy season so expect to cross rivers and muddy and rocky trails. some rocky paths were slippery. Trekking poles are helpful!

Amazing views of Machu Picchu! Well worth the climb. Great end to our Inca Trail trek.

This trail is all stairs ALL THE WAY. Pace yourself. Slow and steady is key here. Beautiful views of Machu Picchu throughout the trail. It took us about 2.5 hours to finish. I highly recommend this hike for anyone up for a challenge. It did rain on our way down which made the rocks very slippery. So make sure to bring a rain jacket and wear shoes with good tread.

We left later than most and avoided the 7am slot. We instead toured the ruins with our awesome guide Elisban from Trexperience first thing in the morning. We got great photos inside the ruins while the fog was still out, and after the tour did this hike. It was hotter but the trail was much quieter. We were told it would take around 3 hours. 2 up and 1 down. That didn’t account for the 30 minutes resting, eating, and soaking in the incredible views! Can’t wait to do the other mountain next time around!

More challenging than I expected. Over a thousand feet of steep, wet Inca stairs.

Nothing moderate about this, go slow and eat lots of cocoa leaves if you have them. Most enjoyable part of our tour, second to exploring the ruins of course.

From Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu by bus, then hike up to Waynapicchu and down

Fascinating hike that goes though the ruins of Machu Picchu. Best time to start is early morning with appropriate permit to Wayna Picchu section. Continue further after reaching the highest point and you’ll get behind the mountain to sacred area of Temple de la Luna. Few tourists there and perfect place for meditation, mountain and jungle views.
