Beautiful trail. You can walk right down to the seafront and then back up the steps. Gorgeous sea views, recommend going for sunset, evening. Stunning.

Very steep and slippery at places. Wear grippy shoes. Great workout.

Perfect day for a hike. Not too hot. Trail in good condition.

Great trail for pack carrying a toddler. There are regular rest areas with seating which makes changes so much easier. The trail itself has fantastic views and is well maintained.

It's all the way up and all the way down! There's a nice amount of trees providing shade but is exposed at the top so be careful if it's a windy day

Lovly, easy, but good cardiovascular walk.

Highly recommend the extreme incline to start with...I dont want to imagine walking down this hill. it's about 2km of sun-soaked rock face that gets to a 50° angle in spots, but rewards with incredible views of the Hutt Valley. It's often said "you cant beat a good day in Wellington"....and today was exactly that... will definitely do this trail again!

All our family is abroad, so we decided to hike and have a picnic up top this route on Christmas day! Amazing views, an excellent workout. Not as hard as we expected, and waaaaay more traffic than we expected. We opted to start at paekikariki and hike back to pukerua, and I think we took the easy way....lots of stairs! Definitely will do it again, but in reverse!

Really nice run on an easy to follow track - perfect for beginners like me. I went on a Sunday afternoon and shared the track with about a dozen walkers and a couple of runners and mountain bikers.

Had an awesome walk and learned a bunch about why Battle Hill is named as such. Not too challenging at all, other than the mine field of thistles and sheep droppings as you ascend the summit! Highly recommend this walk with kids, as there is lots to learn, great views to see and animals to navigate around! A real gem of a trail! Knobby shoes would help, but not absolutely necessary.

Its too good for beginners.. nice sea view at end of the trail

I enjoyed this walk in November 2019. There isn’t much to see at Donnelly Flat but it was a nice walk. Note that if you do the loop it is not flat and not easily navigated with a pram. There was a fair amount of mud and I would have preferred just the out and back since I had sneakers not my tramping boots.

Not too congested on a Tuesday afternoon. Definitely recommend Pukerua Bay to Pakaek route for more of a challenge. Can get pretty windy and exposed. Clocked it in 1 hour 45, going at a non stop pace, but can also be a leisurely scenic walk, depending on what you're after. Beautiful and rewarding as always

Great easy walk. However, there isnt much sun that gets into this walk.

Stunning views throughout the hike of Wellington City to the east and Maraka and rolling green hills to the west. Once you’re up on the ridge the grading is pretty flat, except for the climb to the peak of Mt Kaukau. Kaukau is a highlight of the walk and there are some benches at the summit if you want to stop for lunch or just for a well-earned break. The track is generally well signposted and takes you through some private farmland, so you could get a close encounter with a cow or two. It’s popular with trail runners and mountain bikers, so you’ll probably see a few people. There are numerous entry and exit points through the track, and most seem to have public transport options close by. So even though it’s not a loop track, it’s quite easy to get to.

steeper than expected, but gratifying views at the top. BRING KNOBBY SHOES! Especially if it's rained recently! took a little under 2 hours and was a great time!

I’d say this trail is more easy then moderate, take the left path to finish the walk with sea views and rockpooling - great walk in the sunshine

good track. a little harder than "moderate"if you are not that fit OR not used to hill walking. watch out for mountain bikers.

nice track, not too crowded and walking along the coastline is always great. great spot to have lunch halfway and watch ths kitesurfers ripping around.

We went on a weekday and it was quiet. The walk itself is long, but super easy. Once you get to the climb, it’s well worth it. It’s a good wide trail to walk and talk.

The best way to the trail pleasantly is to start from Paekakariki Train station, there are plenty of free car park at the station. The climb from her is only a quarter amount if you start at Pukareo Bay. Take your time and enjoy the amazing scenery. We started our walk at 12 noon in 19th of September, it took us 4.5 hrs comfortably with so many stops and photo taking. Take the 2 steps down contentiously and stop to stop the shakes on your knee and enjoy the highs. As you finish the track stay on the left side of the train track and follow the sign to train station which is about 8 mins walk at Pukoreo Bay back to Paekakariki station for $4 per person. Will highly recommend this track everyone able. The key is take your time, 1litre of water a chocolate, sandwiches and a fruit is more than enough.

Good place to start training for a tramp in December. Getting used to a fully equipped pack weight again. Great views at top.

Great track, not to long (took us just under an hour) but the walk back up the hill isn’t great for the weak lungs

Nice spring day run
