We started the hike at 7am. Once we got to the red crater, it was very cloudy. It was SO cloudy that we didn’t even see the crater, the lakes, nothing! So we had to stay and wait a bit for it to clear out, and boy... are we happy we did! The view is just amazing. Totally worth the hike! The climb up was better than expected, so don’t get disencouraged!

Tout simplement la plus belle randonné faite !

Lots of volcanic scenery. The hike up is nice, the steep scramble down just when you get over the highest point was hard, down a steep sandy hill is not my thing. Last few km's through the forest were nice. It's a good hike, but a bit overhyped.

The shuttles canceled because of the weather and the front desk at our hotel was dismissive when we said we would try to do it anyway, saying there was going to be 125 km gusts. Ultimately what we did was drove to the end of the hike and parked our car. We hiked 6 miles until the Blue Lakes section and turned around. At that point it got really windy and really cold, so going any further would have been difficult. The 2 women that also did the hike with us turned back at around the 3 mile mark because of the wind, but it really wasn’t bad until we hit the blue lakes. Anyway, was definitely worth it. The lake was beautiful and great overlooks throughout the hike. If the shuttles get canceled, I definitely suggest our plan...It’s your typical gradual incline difficulty but average hikers can handle it. Took us 3 hours 45 mins to the blue lakes with plenty of stops. 2 hours back.

Incredible, once in a lifetime track. I am a fit male in my mid 30s and this was HARD. My pregnant wife was also with me but we were able to complete the track in about 7hrs. Bring plenty of water and food. The only down side was there was alot of people and alot that were seriously ill prepared for a track of this nature. Wearing your tennis shoes and yoga pants isn't being prepared!

Like they say , one of the best day hikes there is ! Do it ! It’s long and a bit tough but so worth every step. Definitely a highlight of my trip to NZ !

Wegen schlechtem Wetter konnten wir den Trail nur vom Ende aus starten und mussten nach der Hälfte umkehren.

Hard trail that provides beautiful views. We got to the trailhead at 9:30AM and finished a bit before 4PM. The way up and down are both challenging. Bring lots of water, layers, and hiking poles as much of the trail is exposed and many parts are rocky and prone to sliding.

This trek was definitely difficult but worth it for the view on the top. Got a clear but windy day - bring wind gear! Very windy on the ridge. Took about 6 hours. Very crowded at the start but thins out over time! The switch backs on the way out take deceivingly forever.

Scree on the way down. Make sure you see the cauldron, don’t stop at the first summit.

My first long (15km<) hike, amazing experience, gorgeous views, can be challenging when going uphill. Gets crowded too. Will do it again!

Very challenging with great views. Fortunate to have good weather, clouds did obscure views from the top. Not for the faint of heart. Be prepared.

Conditions today were good. Too cloudy at the top. Not a great view. This trail will test you. 199 flights of stairs per apple health app and close to 31,000 steps.

A lifetime experience like no other, glad to have done this hike. For perspective, I am 49 years old, about 30 lbs overweight but in good health and relatively active. I hike in my home state of Arkansas regularly and exercise on the daily. This hike challenged me, but I was able to complete it and felt good at the end, although tired. In preparation of this hike, I started carrying a backpack with provisions on my hikes leading up to this. Also, made sure I could hike 9 miles carrying a pack and that I could walk 13 miles in a day with no issues. Once I passed my self imposed “tests” I knew I could do this. We had a clear day. The climb up is steady and steep but just take breathers. Most fit “looking” people were seen catching their breath! So just take your time! Enjoy the top views for as long as you like because the downhill is a slog of never ending switchbacks lol. The red crater descent was the hardest and trickiest. I had two walking poles and went very slowly sideways. Put two poles down, slide your feet, put two poles down, slide your feet, took me 35 mins but I didn’t fall haha. Don’t let doubt get you. Just do it and enjoy the sense of joy and achievement!

This hike is an experience of a life time. After trying for a couple of days, my wife and I finally caught some good weather (albeit 150 km/hr winds at the peaks!) and were able to complete the entire hike. Every step on this hike is earned and rewarded with breathtaking 360 degree views. While the hike is fantastic, come prepared with proper gear, water, and food!
