Beautiful walk along the coastline looking up to some impressive cliffs. Only the end of the track is closed. You still get to have a look at one of the gannet colonies.

Top ! Ce qui est fermé est juste la fin de la rando pour voir la colonie PRINCIPALE de gannet ! La rando se fait quand même et est super sympa et on voit quand même une colonie à la fin (bien que plus petite).

Toujours fermée le 24 décembre 2019

Nice walk on the forest. About 5 hours for all. This track goes until sandy Bay hut, it is not just the lake

checked the conditions of the track very well before going. closed for landslides. very sad considering I spent a day in the area because of this...

Amazing 4 day tramp with stunning views all around. Went the opposite way to the norm starting at Whanganui hut. Ascended the mountain day 3 and saw the bluffs on day 4 when packs were lightest and views were the most stunning (ending the trek on a high). Weather varied, sunny and hot day 2, freezing and snow day 3-4 up at Panekire hut. Bring warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag For just incase, we were freezing all night and wood was too damp to start a fire :(

superbe la colonie de fou austral est là début octobre ballade top 3 NZ avec cap Reinga-cap von diemen et le cap Brett

Really cool walk - did this with my wife over 2 nights / 3 days. We got the water taxi to the north of the lake ($80pp) and then walked anti-clockwise. The lake is stunning and the track runs alongside before heading up in to hills. Beautiful views for the top. Parts of the track a bit muddy but nothing to strenuous. We had amazing sunny weather the whole time we were there - really made the difference!!!

We did it with kids age 11 and 12, going up was not easy, but enjoyed great views.

The views are amazing ! But disappointed with the water taxi over charging $110 for a 15 min ride in a fishing boat .

Worth every step! Just amazing to hike along the beach with the cliffs behind. Don't walk under the cliffs, be aware that a slide could come down anytime. You can start only 2.5 hours before low tide, and have to leave the Cape at least 1.5 hours after low time. There is no other way to go out... The gannets are awesome to watch, if you go between Dec and April. They are not shy at all and pass by very closely. Enjoy, we loved it!

Awesome north island hike!

Very nice walk over the beach at low tide below a cliff. The birds colony is nice to see but the views are worth the walk in its own!

Ascended long up from Onepoto slow and steady with tree roots being the pathway’s staircase. Beautiful old trees and stunning lake views. Panikere Hut first night. Viewed Sunrise from the approach stairs. Easy walk next day to Waiopaoa Hut so left packs there and visited Korokoko waterfalls as wouldn’t have enough Time our last day because got picked up by water taxi at 3 from Mauititi Hut. 4th day we would have completed but not enough time. Lots of very steep path and steps going other way from Waiopoa Hut to Panikere so kind of pleased started at Onepoto. Extremely beautiful walk and great huts.

Did this over three days, missing the ascent due to three 6 yr olds in our group. Had a fantastic time, the scenery is incredible. One of the kids caught a decent sized trout just with a spinning rod while we were having a rest. Plenty of wildlife. The huts we stayed in were great...in fact one of them was more like a lodge! One of NZ's great walks!

Loved this hike! The bird life is phenomenal. Walked in with my husband, 12yr old and 4yr old. The first part of the track to the lake is really wide and well maintained with seats to sit and rest or appreciate your surroundings! Stayed in the hut for a couple of nights, thoroughly enjoyed this hike, one of my favourites and the lake is beautiful.
