Great trail for an easy but beautiful stroll! Costs $50 pesos per person. Lots to see! Well worth it!

For an easy 1/2 day walk with lots of nature and a beautiful canyon, we truly enjoyed the opportunity to see what a restored native landscape looks like for the area. A new education center is in the process of being built and the botanic garden itself houses endangered plants species from other areas that were needing protection. Bring your lunch for a picnic or enjoy some snacks at the small cantina.

The advantage of this trail is you can start right off directly from the La Presa neighborhood, at the city’s eastern edge. It was listed as moderate but as casual hikers in our early 60’s, we learned the true meaning of a moderate hike. The trail has some loser rocky areas along steeper slopes on the trail up that had us evaluating whether to continue or not at one point. Because it was just the two of us, we opted not to continue on the trail, although we met two women hikers in their 30s who were happily hiking along, and a family with children about the ages of 8 - 12 that had trekked ahead of us and left us in the dust. A local cautioned us to do the hike on the weekend when others would be on the trail as occasionally some unsavory characters will seek to steal from you. If you want to hike during quieter times of the week, it was recommended to take 200 pesos on the trail with us, just in case, to give to such characters and have nothing else with you, like your cell phone. We really enjoyed the part of the trail we did climb and observed several bird species, insects and plants along the way. There was enough traffic to feel safe and great views of the city as well as a feeling of getting away from it all. The caves at the start of the trail housed a shrine to St. Ignacio which is home to a local annual festival. Might have to revisit this with friends and increased stamina in the future!

Great trail right out of town. Only negative was having to walk on barely any shoulder road for a bit. Would rate moderate but for the initial climb to lighthouse. Plenty of good foot and hand grabs though.

Excellent area, gorgeous views. No one around for miles. We started on the lighthouse side, which is steep. Once you head away from the lighthouse (following the AllTrails red line map for this trail), there really is no trail to see or find. Who cares though, you have AllTrails to guide you so just follow yourself. Toward the end (where you can see the person who’s map is recorded got “lost” a couple times), it really is just bouldering straight down. There is no trail. We followed some random spray painted arrows and those went off the trail presented here and away from town, so we just followed this map. If you want a challenge do it. I would do this hike again, but I love bushwhacking.

vraiment très jolies vues depuis les hauteurs, idéal pour sortir rapidement du tumulte de la ville! Marcher au milieu des vaches, des chèvres et des chevaux dans un décor de rêve, c'est apaisant

Great views, we did it around 11 am took us about 3 hours was pretty humid due to heavy rains yesterday. We did not see any people during the hike. App works wonderful in pro mode. Lots of cattle around. We had to pass two gates used and locked so cattle don’t get out of area. Some mosquitos during summer / rainy season. We passed 2 small huts were empty. One of the BEST hikes i have done here in San Miguel De Allende. LOVED IT! July 14 2019

It’s great but no specific trail to guide you.

The first section is very steep and there’s another very steep part, just before you descend. Otherwise it was a great hike with great views!! Also, there are markings along most of the trail to give a sense of direction. Be careful not to follow the marked rocks which lead toward the big beautiful rock formations to your left, as this moves you away from the steep trail down.

The Sierra de Santa Rosa is an ideal place to hike and enjoy nature. I could not imagine how close to the city of Guanajuato in Mexico there would be such a fascinating place, everything there is beautiful. I hiked on this mountains and visited the little town of Santa Rosa de Lima during the rainy season, but it was a day without rain with a pleasant climate, and a little fog that gave a very nice touch to the landscape. The dam is an amazing place, here I was resting and enjoying some pleasant moments of quietude. Definitely I will come again and explore more trails of this beautiful sierra.

Contemplate the city of Guanajuato in Mexico from the mountains that surround it, was a great experience for me. This time I wanted to hike and a guide accompanied me to visit the beautiful area named Los Picachos. Once I arrived to el Cerro de las Comadres, an area with beautiful rocks, I enjoyed a lot the views of the fascinating landscape in all directions. But being in front of the rocks and the cave at el Cerro de la Bufa, and also contemplate the city from there, take your breath away. Walking by the Paseo de la Presa Ave, on the park and near the dam, were also a very pleasant moments. Definitely this was a great trail.
