Hard on knees but it’s exciting to reach the summit of the 4th tallest mountain in the world!

Today was the perfect day for this hike...clear and sunny! Views were amazing, from the valley/ridge, to the ocean and Molokai to the west, and Kahului and Ho'okipa Beach to the east. Pay attention during the journey, some of the best views are before the top. A bit muddy and slippery in places, recommend shoes over sandals and I found my hiking poles helpful. Start early, not much shade and lots of people. Loved this hike!

Awesome trail! It was a little confusing though. Many people kept going straight over a wooden plank, through some rapids with rocks where you get your feet wet and said they never saw a waterfall. We turned around and right before the wooden plank crossing there is some thick bamboo with a narrow trail that follows the creek. If you are walking into the trail facing the wooden plank it will be on your left. We took that and saw an amazing waterfall and since not many people knew it was there we had it all to ourselves.

Did this two days ago. Camped at kipahulu campground and started the trail around 9am as recommended by others. Very happy with that decision as it was getting quite crowded as we finished, was also getting quite warm by that time. First half was muddy but kept fairly clean stepping on rocks and roots. Last half was totally fine. Lots of board walk and rocks, no mud. Crossed the river at the end to get near the fall. It was fine at the time as the water was quite low and you could walk on the rocks. Would be very cautious if the water is high or you have poor balance. Whole thing took about 2-2.5 hours at a very relaxed pace with pauses to snack and enjoy the views.

Didn’t do this hike but stayed at the campground. Quite a bit of space for tents. Plenty of parking for vans and things as well. Several grills around and a small shelter with a grill. Outhouses were kinda gross but they’re there. Went in mid January and it was quite full. Near 0 Celsius over night. Bring warm clothes.

Amazing views at the top, well worth the hike. Trail can be summed up in 3 main phases: 1 steep climb, 2 flat mud, 3 short steep climb with big steps. Then you're at the top. Had running shoes but I'd really reccomended hiking boots due to all of the mud.

The sound of bees is all you’ll hear as you approach the crater on a volcanic overlook. Trade winds keep rolling clouds at the horizon. Short excursion well worth the serenity of the vista.

Fun trail! Although, it was cloudy when we went so we couldn’t see anything from the top. But got to walk through the clouds and feel the mist. The first part is very steep and feels super difficult but well worth it!

The trail was muddy throughout and there was a lot of people. There are 2 stream crossings, but they can be navigated without getting wet. The waterfall is definitely worth the hike.

A bit muddy. Short nature loop. Has huge trees that are great to see and lots of native birds.

Short little trail with good views at end. I thought the other overlook and summit trail views were better.

Trail is best enjoyed early in the morning (before 9am) since the tourists driving the Road To Hana can't reach it quickly-- Camping in the park and hiking first thing in the morning is recommended. Gets extraordinarily crowded in the afternoon, even on off-season weekdays. Extremely muddy and wet in the winter, definitely requires full hiking boots to be enjoyable. saw many folks in tennis shoes and flip-flops trudging back down, discouraged. Trail to the waterfall is a consistent uphill, slightly steep in spots, with many stone stair portions. It took us about an hour and a half to climb it, and half that returning. The first waterfall is pretty unremarkable, and if at all possible you should at least continue to the waterfall at the bridge before the bamboo forest to make the trip worth it. The final river crossing to stand before the last waterfall can be treacherous and should be considered optional-- the views before it are just as good as those after, and the trail stops twenty feet past the crossing. If you want to attempt it, grab a length of bamboo to help you across the rocks before you exit the forest, if some has fallen conveniently.
