Cool to begin at 55 degrees so started with light jackets. It’s been dryer the past few days so the trail was in decent condition but you will get muddy. Hiked it 4 years ago and it is now more overgrown in spots but easily doable. My wife would have liked hiking pants but I was fine in shorts. We are in our mid fifties and took our time on the slippery sections. The lookout at the end of the Swamp Trail was socked in but the hike is well worth the 5 hours it took.

You have to walk up the stairs of the backside of the fort . beautiful beach views

This was a beautiful trail. The first two miles follow the coast to secret beach, which was amazing. The second two miles follow the river to the falls. There were several river crossings most with no way to stay dry. The are some areas with slippery rocks, so bring appropriate footwear and maybe some extra socks. I was glad I wore hiking boots. This trail is 8 miles round trip and pretty treacherous in some areas but the views of the Na Pali coast, the beach, and the waterfall make it totally worth it.

My wife and I did this with our 5 month old. We arrived around 730am and were the first ones on the trial. It’s been the first sunny day this week and even though it was muddy the fact that we didn’t have rain made it so much less slippery. Just embrace the mud ‘cause it’s going to get you if you make it all the way out - it’ll be a lot faster than tinkering around everything. Our 5 mo old was a champ the entire time. Def a must!

Does anyone have a good guide recommendation for this hike?

Super cool views, and occasional hump back whale sightings. Not something I would consider a “hike,” but certainly a beautiful tourist attraction. It does cost $10 per person to get in, but if you have a National Parks pass admission is free.

Nice view and beautiful birds, but $10? Not sure it’s worth it, maybe just to help keep it maintained because it’s historical?

This trail was one of my favorites yet on our trip! The Pihea trail was rocky and slick but showed amazing views and the Alaka’i Swamp Trail was very jungle like (many parts of the boardwalk were out or wobbly so strategy will come into play). The lookout was cloudy but still very pretty when the clouds parted. This was 9 miles in total and took us 5.5 hours.

Hiked the long way all the way to the falls. Great experience but pretty exhausting for this 50+ year old, fat washed up athlete. Glad I did this now. Probably could not have pulled it off later in life. Would not recommend on rainy days.

Checked this out Jan 12. The access to the road to get down to parking was closed due to a flood watch. But the FB page said we could get to the cave area via CMJ ranch. There is a road to the left of the ranch signs that people were parking on. A bit rough and muddy so we left the rental at the start of the road. It was a short trail from there and the cave was amazing! The little hole to crawl through is very short thankfully. A little mucky but nothing crazy. We did some of the heritage trail after that and it had some amazing views. No rain even though forecast and current conditions said rain. Windy for sure but pleasant. Would have been nice to do the entire heritage trail but we lacked time. Also, keep going over the bridge and check out the tortoise sanctuary.

So the trail on the All Trails app is actually a road. Bumpy is an understatement...riddled with ruts and pot holes. Drive SLOWLY if you don’t have a vehicle with good suspension. We went on a day it was dry and did fine. Just had to go slow. The road is about 3 miles and it took us about 25-30 minutes. We took beach supplies and were able to carry them easily up the dune. Beautiful views of the Nepali Coast! Sacred spot in Hawaiian culture so respect the area. We waded in the water but didn’t go beyond the reef. Wish we had brought snorkeling equipment.

My wife and I did this trail yesterday and it was muddy wonderful! We hike a lot but this was very challenging. Amazing views all the way through. You will need to cross many streams. Some very small. Others were sketchy as hell. It rained a lot. I’m 6’3” and the first main “stream” was well above my knee. We were warned by the ranger at that crossing that it was not recommended. We crossed anyways and found out later you need to cross it again and again and again and yet again to reach the waterfall. We hiked all the way up with a half mile to go but pulled the plug. It rained so much that the last crossing was just too dangerous. Realistically we shouldn’t have went as far as we did because recrossing them was a little terrifying. We ran into the ranger on the way back down and he informed us that we were among the last people on the trail and he closed it to the public. Crossing the last stream back, it was up to my waist. It was more of an angry river. People have died at that crossing so be careful. We wore hiking boots and brought trekking poles. No way would I do this trail without them. Prepare to be wet. Good luck!
