The trail is moderately strenuous . A fallen tree blocks the trail and is very difficult to climb over it. Also the steep trail is slippery. my spouse slipped and fell 4 times while wearing hiking boots. The views are incredible. Take your time. bring water it's hot, wear proper hiking gear, and watch your footing.

Nice walk in the woods. Lots of bird song. Went at 5 p.m. & only saw 2 other folks.

Excellent views and well worth it getting down to the shore. Round trip 52 minutes but stopped and enjoyed the scenery and water at the bottom. Made it back up in just under 10 minutes running, jogging, and power walking. Will post pics later.

Well worth the hike, even if it is a busy location. The variety of fish is amazing & we even saw a turtle swim by. The trail is rocky and the last third is very exposed. We saw several folks in flip flops & slides. We also saw several people struggling with the heat & one who had tripped on the rocks & gotten pretty banged up. I recommend shoes that protect the feet, sandals and/or snorkel gear for at the bottom, and plenty of water & some electrolytes for the less fit hikers.

Perfect trail for someone from the desert that wanted to hike in a green rainforest! We hiked this in the rain, just a few muddy spots, didn’t see bugs. Beautiful flowers on this trail, too! As other reviews noted, good thing I downloaded the map, many off-shoot trails that could be confusing...!

I hiked all the way to the intersection of Napau trail and Naulu trail. it's kind of sad that I was only 1.5 miles from finishing the entire Napau trail, but we decided to go back for safety concerns, as it was raining heavily and the trail near the Naulu intersection was super muddy. I planned to come back maybe in a few years to start from the Naulu trail side. There are two parts I like the most: 1. I hiked a bit off the trail (not recommended) to go up to Mauna Ulu. the cone is deep and the cliff is super steep. walking along the edge made me feel unsafe, but it was a rewarding experience. 2. there is an area full of steam vents. walking in that area with the gust blowing reminded me of fancy dry ice stage effect. advices: 1. hiking shoes are necessary, and it allows you to walk faster and safer. 2. rain coat or water-proof jacket helps. the weather changes rapidly in that area, and the wind is sometimes huge. the weather was cloudy when we started, but when we reached makaupuhi Crater, it started raining. the rain became much heavier on our way back and the visibility decreased from miles to about 200 ft. 3. keep an eye on the stone piles, especially when the visibility is poor. since everything is black, you need to pay more attention to avoid losing your track. walking off the trail is kind of dangerous since some areas are hollow underneath and the floor can be unstable. 4. I can image that a lot of water is needed if it's a sunny day, given that the area is very exposed. however, I only consumed a few sips given the cool and rainy weather.

Nice walk through the forest. Went in the rain, was muddy but the lava rock helps with traction. You could make this a much longer hike if you went on one of the side trails.

Excellent views and very easy trail. I’ve always found this to be a very beautiful place and it truly has a spiritual vibe to it. Loved this trail!

Great views! Hike down was nice and easy, but did have mud and loose rocks to watch for. At first it seems like it’s through overgrown fauna, but once you come out of the overgrowth it’s beautiful the rest of the way down. Hiking back up is a bit more of a challenge but definitely not super difficult. Would say it’s moderate to hard. Worth the trek down!

Such a fun trail but we didn’t follow the hike described here but did some if the other trails. Definitely have your map going & take the Jurassic spur. Gorgeous

This hike was very unplanned — my cousin and I were driving to Kona without intentions of ending up here. But, we did! She was in her flip flops and I was in some white slip on ON’s. It was muddy and the terrain was rocky but the hike both down and up were a breeze for us, despite our lack of hiking shoes. Going down to the monument is pretty smooth and painless since it’s a downhill, but the terrain can be challenging. It is a bit rocky, especially as you get closer to the monument. Yes, it is true that the snorkeling at the bottom is PHENOMENAL. I would highly recommend making the hike, I just wish it wasn’t so populated all the time. The best time to go snorkeling would probably be sunrise or just early morning in general before all the boats and tourists arrive for the day. Hiking back to the top is a bit more challenging than going down, because it is a gradual uphill the whole way. Keep in mind, you’ll be exposed to direct sunlight for a big portion of the hike, so always stay hydrated (but especially on the trek back up because it’s fairly demanding). You’ll also probably see some adorable goats on the way. Enjoy!

Great hike, down was the easy part. Snorkelling was the best I’ve seen but there were a lot of people. Up make sure you have water it’s harder than you think but there is shade and a decent breeze

Wow! Go early morning because of the heat & no shade coming back. We finished at 1 & it was really hot. Great snorkeling at the bottom but tons of people.
