More of a walk lots of goats

Beautiful trail in rain forest, then you get to walk across the crater. Excellent hike...not to be missed! Had planned to do a 12 mile hike but road closed 4 miles from trailhead. This hike had everything in a 3 mile loop!

This trail goes through dense vegetation and you will encounter a lot of mosquitoes and slippery rocks to navigate on the way down. There is a super interesting tree at the trailhead that sports giant evergreen pom poms and has 6 foot tall "cat tails" growing up out of it! But the most interesting part of the hike was the loud rumbling I heard. Thought it was a plane, but then thought about how I was walking on the Southwest Rift zone and how the recent seismic activity on Mauna Loa is mimicking conditions prior to the 1975 and 1984 eruptions! Hmm...

All Trails description of this trail is exact. It is an incredible hike, challenging for anyone. 5.6 miles on All Trails, my buddy’s watch calculated it at 6.76 miles. It feels longer than 5.6 miles. Loose gravel, larger lava rocks, and snow make up the terrain. We were above the clouds by 10,000 ft. It’s simply incredible to see. Be sure to bring plenty of water, food, and layers. We started in t-shirts and would have loved winter jackets at summit. Altitude sickness is a very real concern (starting the day near sea level doesn’t help). Be ready for the symptoms, drink water, and slow down. At 13,000 ft I was a goner, I really, really struggled the last 1-1.5 miles. Plan for an all day trip, it’s worth it and you’ll be thankful you took the time.

Very unique landscape. This trail is all about the hike and not the destination. Take your time and explore.

This is a walk not a hike. It is through a historical site in the national park. It is absolutely beautiful, well worth the $20/vehicle entry fee. Well kept washrooms and lots of park staff. Really cool historical buildings and carvings to see and a small roped off area where sea turtles rest on land. There is a trail near by that goes to Ho’okena beach. It is hard to find but park rangers are happy to help. Lots of goats around but also lots of sun so bring water and sun protection. On the other side of the park from the trail to Ho’okena is a great snorkelling area although be very careful. There is no sand, just lots of rock and coral. Getting in and out was quite treacherous especially with any amount of surf. Many people came out bleeding. There is a shallow area with a nice sandy entrance that is less treacherous but also a bit less exciting.

This trail is actually open!!! Parked at the visitor’s center then proceeded to the trail about a hundred yards or so give or take up the road. One of our group backed down after about a mile or so and picked us up at the top. The views are some of the best I’ve ever encountered. This was a good warmup to getting prepared for Mount Whitney one day.

Super boring. Trail is not marked. Thank goodness the guy at the bike shop said to follow the white paint. The beach that’s right there, is amazing though.

Too much hiking on the road.

The trail is moderately strenuous . A fallen tree blocks the trail and is very difficult to climb over it. Also the steep trail is slippery. my spouse slipped and fell 4 times while wearing hiking boots. The views are incredible. Take your time. bring water it's hot, wear proper hiking gear, and watch your footing.

Nice walk in the woods. Lots of bird song. Went at 5 p.m. & only saw 2 other folks.

We are novice hikers in our 60’s. Trail was challenging but no worse for wear. A little disappointed there were not more view points. We stopped at the botanical signage but at this time in January no flora in bloom. I did see the biggest butterfly I’ve ever seen. It was probably about 8” tip to tip.

Great hike rough in some areas with the lava but most is smooth. Nice stretch along the beach where u can see sea turtles
