Beautiful trail in rain forest, then you get to walk across the crater. Excellent hike...not to be missed! Had planned to do a 12 mile hike but road closed 4 miles from trailhead. This hike had everything in a 3 mile loop!

Weather conditions were perfect: sunny with very little wind. There was considerable ice covered snow on the way up which softened on the way down. Made for a striking contrast with the lava rock formations. The views into the caldera are unique and spectacular. Fun hike with plenty of challenge. Lava rocks are varied in type and hard on shoes but I wore hiking boots and had no problems. Route finding is trivial but I had perfect conditions. I took ibuprofen throughout the hike and had no ill effects from altitude. Bring lots of water as I went through three liters and a Gatorade and still ran out. The road from the highway up to the trailhead is like a rollercoaster and was also fun.

Fantastic. Best part is walking over the old lava lake ( not sure if that is correct terminology) parking was full but other lots have trails that connect. In hind sight would look at spending a couple of nights there to explore more.

This was a beautiful hike! We did the guided tour and it took FOREVER! I would not recommend it because it took us 2 hours to hike down 1/2 mile because the tour guide kept stopping to talk for 20 minutes. It took us about 20 minutes to hike back out. The crater was so cool, the hike was gorgeous, and our kids ages 11, 9, and 6 were able to do the hike just fine. It was a little steep and might be hard for people with knee pain, etc.

One of the best trails. Counterclockwise is best. Beautiful ferns and trees and jungle for a mile then you get to walk across this surreal barren crater. My favorite place on the big island. The whole loop was open. 3.3 miles total.

I hiked all the way to the intersection of Napau trail and Naulu trail. it's kind of sad that I was only 1.5 miles from finishing the entire Napau trail, but we decided to go back for safety concerns, as it was raining heavily and the trail near the Naulu intersection was super muddy. I planned to come back maybe in a few years to start from the Naulu trail side. There are two parts I like the most: 1. I hiked a bit off the trail (not recommended) to go up to Mauna Ulu. the cone is deep and the cliff is super steep. walking along the edge made me feel unsafe, but it was a rewarding experience. 2. there is an area full of steam vents. walking in that area with the gust blowing reminded me of fancy dry ice stage effect. advices: 1. hiking shoes are necessary, and it allows you to walk faster and safer. 2. rain coat or water-proof jacket helps. the weather changes rapidly in that area, and the wind is sometimes huge. the weather was cloudy when we started, but when we reached makaupuhi Crater, it started raining. the rain became much heavier on our way back and the visibility decreased from miles to about 200 ft. 3. keep an eye on the stone piles, especially when the visibility is poor. since everything is black, you need to pay more attention to avoid losing your track. walking off the trail is kind of dangerous since some areas are hollow underneath and the floor can be unstable. 4. I can image that a lot of water is needed if it's a sunny day, given that the area is very exposed. however, I only consumed a few sips given the cool and rainy weather.

Went around 9am & the temps were perfect. Beautiful rainforest for going down & coming back up. Fun to walk across the crater floor. Some vents were hissing steam! We did this trail as a loop & my gps said 3.6 miles.

Fantastic hike! Counterclockwise is definitely the way to go. Steep but short downhill to the crater is well maintained with steps and rail. Cairns used to mark the way across the crater bottom. Walk across faults, find steam vents. Uphill is comfortable pitch switchbacks to the top. Temperature and conditions can vary quite a bit from top to bottom. Amazing hike only took 1.5 hours.

The trail was closed right before the end of the lookout. I was so bugged they didn’t close it off before that so I knew I could never get to the end and see anything.

Très facile. L'île contient 23 000 pétroglifs. A voir. prenez le temps de lire les inscriptions.
