Beautiful trail, not too busy on October 22nd. Would rate as moderate as the trail itself is very easy, just long.

Wonderful hike- absolutely gorgeous. Starting early is key, avoids the mad rush of people and there’s more shade in the canyon than if you went through it mid day. Very rocky and the first kilometer or so is fairly steep so it’s hard on your knees. If you head out of the state park and walk (or catch a van ride down) 3km to the port, there is the most gorgeous water I’ve ever seen. The beach is free and renting a chair is 7 euro. Make sure to pack your bathing suit and take a dip on the Mediterranean Sea! We took a bus to the top and caught a ferry and bus to get back to Chania. (I think the company was called Elafannosis) Zero problem with the company but take drammamine for the bus rides. Those mountain roads are killer!

Amazing canyon and beach. But we did half of trail with car. As we had kids and grandmoms, lucky we did that. First half would be dusty road with cars passing by. If possible, recommend going all the way to canyon parking with car.

I recommend this trail for moderately experienced hikers. Wear HIKERS! It is so rocky. I did it in running shoes and I'm sure the feet are bruised. Dont rush this hike. Stop, look around at this most amazing and breath taking planet! The views are breath taking. It will make your heart sing!

This hike was stunningly beautiful and the beach at the end while waiting for the ferry absolutely amazing as well. Certainly a bucket-list-worthy hike. A few things to keep in mind I didn’t know going in: - the terrain is very rocky almost the whole way through. Expect to be stepping on/between rocks the whole time. Some are pointy, some are smooth, some are slippery, so keep that in mind as well. I did this hike in my train running shoes, and felt totally fine as a decently active regular hiker. Someone in my group had standard running shoes (Nike) and her feet were painful by the end. Something with a piece of plastic in the sole will help. - if you start the trail after 8:30a (ie you take a bus up to the trailhead) you’ll be trekking among hundreds of people almost the whole way through. Even on a weekday in the end of September, it’s tough to get away from the crowds. Most people are total amateur “hikers” who seem mildly offended when you want to pass them, even if you ask nicely (keep in mind most people wont speak English as their first language so asking nicely is not straightforward). Personally, I find this detracts significantly from the hiking experience but the beauty of the hike and the beach make it worth it anyways. - there is significant water gathering opportunities along the way. You really don’t need more than 1 L. I would recommend carrying empty bottles to fill at the end though if your trip home is long. - I had a pretty bad tour bus experience with KTEL. Would recommend avoiding them if possible. Didn’t have another way to get to the trailhead and shot myself in the foot with this one. If you do choose to take a tour bus, try to book your stay in Crete in Chania or somewhere closer to the trailhead so you won’t spend as much time traveling. - be careful driving on the mountain roads on Crete. Watch out for goats! Hopefully this review is helpful. Overall, I loved this experience and hope to return again someday :)

wow, belle randonnée, facile a suivre.

Excellent hike and beautiful! More shade than I thought, but we started at 8AM from the top. We were on one of the first busses to arrive. There are a lot of drinking water spots to refill, I certainly didn’t need to bring 3L of water like I did. Very steep and hard on the knees in the beginning, but the 2nd half is much flatter. Def recommend, but it is a long one!

A rocky and crowded trail with any inexperienced hikers. It has about a 3,000 foot drop and 10+ mile length. Most beautiful is the “Iron Gate,” the narrow section near the bottom.

nice gorge hike but very crowded

It was alright. The top of the lighthouse is closed which was disappointing. If you’re in the area and want a little walk in the sun it’s worth checking out. You might have a split moment to snap a shot of the lighthouse without many people but so many take pictures on the stairs and others have no regard for people trying to take photos and will walk right into the shot. There was a really smelly part that stunk like a bathroom that hasn’t been washed in years. If you walk the top ledge it gets kinda rocky, there’s stairs at the end but many older people hop off as it gets really bad.

Absolutely stunning. Everything we wanted and more. It’s not too difficult - it’s entirely downhill (don’t trust the AllTrails altitude guide, it’s way off). I knocked a star off for the shear number of people. Many points during the day we were in standstill from a constant traffic jam. Get up early!! Still absolutely worth it though. Especially getting to the seaside and diving into crystal clear water. Amazing.

Really cool terrain hiking down a famous gorge in Crete. Dramatic gorge walls after the old Samaria village halfway down. Because of popularity it is a very busy trail (at least when I hiked mid-August). If I came back I would hike one of the other less crowded gorges. That said, scenery is spectacular and I don’t regret walking down. Bonus to this hike is that it ends at a beach so you can jump in the water to cool down.

Amazing and breath taking. The view once you’ve climbed done into the Gorge is incredible. We did this walk in August. My three children were 6,9 and 11 and they all loved the walk. Water packs for all is essential plus sturdy footwear. Take plenty of snacks and enjoy the walk x

Very nice trail. I left early so that it wouldn't be too crowded (in August). Well kept and fun to run !

Easy downhill trek. Hardest part was the heat as you arrive in the gorge in the afternoon heat. A nice day hike, and if you can, overnight in Agia Roumeli after the hike. It’s a gong show the crowd trying to get on the 5.30 ferry!

Gorgeous the entire way!!! As described, this is all downhill so if you’ve got knee issues, this will hurt. Listen to your body. Beautiful views, the old settlements were a wonderful diversion from the trail. If you have an opportunity to do this hike, I highly recommend it. It’s an experience you will carry with you forever.

North-south this is a mostly downhill trail. Lots of midsize rocks so footing can be tricky & can be hard on knees / ankles if that’s an issue. Plenty of potable water and WCs along the trail. I would rate this direction as “medium”. Bring a bathing suit to jump in the ocean afterwards!

This trail is beautiful but hard! We wore tennis shoes and our feet were sore. Wear hiking boots! There are so many rocks. A very small portion of the trail is a flat path. With all that, it was still worth it. Right outside the gorge exit is the most delicious freshly squeezed orange juice you’ll ever drink. The village/town after the trail is small with lots of shops, restaurants and the beach. Be sure to check ferry times before starting the hike so you can plan accordingly.

Beautiful in parts and well traversed in others, the gorge proved to be a worth while way to spend the day. I would recommend ankle support, the downhill and side to side activity is relentless.
