The name of this lake is Cuicocha, not sure why it's incorrect here. I think you can take a bus to get there but it doesnt always pass by on the way back. We paid a taxi $30 from Otavalo for the dropoff and pickup. An absolutely gorgeous trail - sign says the whole trail is a little over 8 miles. It's a one-directional trail: you must go counterclockwise, they are pretty serious about this. Bring a hat and wear plenty of sunscreen!! We left with some pretty gnarly sunburns. Temperature varies a lot so have layers you can take off and on. The views are phenomenal in all directions for practically the whole hike, especially on a cloudless day. Took us 5 hours and we felt sore and out of breath during some more rigorous parts. You will definitely feel tired and sore by the end of this hike, and after all the stairs, but it's so worth it!

J’ai adoré Une randonné le fun pas trop exigeante. L’information du trajet sur le sentier est très bien indiqué tout le long du sentier. Beaucoup des points de vue un plus beau que l’autre.

Absolutely amazing! My boyfriend and I are not regular trekkers and not use to high altitude. We went slow and felt out of breath a lot of the way, especially at the beginning. The view makes up for it. It took us just over 4 hours.

Nice moderate trail, took us about 4hrs to complete the long loop which is 12.5km around the lake. I recommend going counter clockwise. You get nice views of the lake from the get go and some steep ascents and steps at the beginning. Towards the end of the hike it's a nice gentle downhill through forest. Make sure to bring a warm layer as the forest side did get chilly and it started raining slightly. Definitely a nice hike to do in preparation for higher elevation and stamina :)

Today I hiked the loop around the lake with my wife and 3 sons (ages 14, 12, 10). We went counter clockwise and the first 4-5 miles are quite challenging. My 10 year old struggled up until we hit the 5 mile mark when the trail descended back to the start. Our GPS says the hike was about 7.6 miles. The temperature can vary dramatically. We were sweating at the beginning and bundled up at the end. We finished right around sunset and we were treated to amazing colors! We almost ran out of water, so plan accordingly. The entire loop is demanding and will be challenging for those who aren't able-bodied. At the end, we voted as a family, and I was surprised that the kids gave it 5 stars since there was quite a bit of complaining for the first half! It was an amazing experience and will be a hike we won't forget!

I hiked Cuicocha today with my wife and 3 sons (ages 14, 12 and 10). My youngest son struggled a bit until we got to about the 5 mile mark (we hiked counter clockwise) when the terrain was flat and gradually down hill. Up until then it's a challenge for the casual hiker or less able-bodied. The views were fantastic and we finished the hike at sunset which provided amazing colors. We've been in Ecuador for a few days and aren't acclimated yet to the elevation and we were gassed on the steepest sections, but it wasn't terrible. We voted as a family and even though there was some complaining from the kids during the harder sections they ultimately gave it 5 stars. What a great experience! The temps varied dramatically, so take layers and a water proof shell. We were sweating the first half, and by the end we were bundled up. We had just enough water, so plan accordingly!

This trail is lovely from all perspectives. It is not a trail for those that are not physically fit. We started the hike around 9am. It gets hot quickly, so the earlier one starts, the better. We chose to do the hike going up the stairs near the entrance at the beginning when we were fresh and feeling strong. There are many sets of stairs at the beginning and we make most of the elevation game early in the hike. There are about 500+ stairs later in the hike, but they are downhill. You are rewarded for taking the stairs early in the hike by a gently sloping trail at the end.

Moderate hike to start on the trails in Ecuador. Good conditions in the trail and well maintained. I recommend going counter-clockwise.

Great 4 - 5 hr easy hike, beautiful surrounds with snow capped Cotocachi Volcano, and Cayambe Volcano in the distance. Absolutely beautiful, trail is marked whole way and offers benches to rest after the few steep climbs, perfect!

Ever changing lake views with a profusion of unique native flora and fauna. Well maintained trail. We hired a guide to explain the various uses of the medicinal plants.
