Hiking

The hike is mainly uphill on the way to the falls. We saw toucans in the trees. There are options to horseback ride/atv/ride in a cart for those who do not want to hike. Go early in the morning and you will have more solitude. Beautiful waterfalls with rocks at the base to lounge. Pack snacks and water. There are changing rooms and restrooms at the falls if you do not want to hike in a swim suit.

Half the trail (south of Punta Cahuita) is closed for repairs (as of March 2020) so you can only enter at the Cahuita side and do that half as an out-and-back. At the Cahuita entrance, there’s no set fee but they strongly recommend some donation. I pretty much immediately saw a couple of sloths because several large tour groups were standing around looking at them. Maybe it’s just high season, or maybe it’s because of the closure, but the trail was pretty crowded when I did it. I also saw raccoons, white-faced monkeys, lizards, butterflies, many birds, and a snake. There are picnic tables throughout the first half of the trail and at the very end. At low tide you could do most of the hike on the beach one way and on the trail on the way back.

One of the best trails I had the pleasure to do. Moderate difficulty with various terrains, rocks, trees. You get to cross rustic bridges, there are like 5 different waterfalls, you walk along rivera. Just awesome!

Cons: We asked a guide about this hike and was told it was about 5 km- definitely closer to 6/7 miles. It has been raining here in Puerto Viejo so the trail was primarily mud with some spots for breathers where you can actually walk and look around. When I say mud, I mean nearly knee-deep, unavoidable spots. I admittedly didn’t have proper footwear so ended up hiking 4+ hours barefoot. It should also be noted there was horse manure scattered throughout the trail as well. It was an experience to say the least! Pros: We did see some cool wildlife– monkeys, frogs, crabs, huge spiders, a capybara (we think). Slipping and sliding was funny at times. There’s another trail off the main trail from Manzanillo that brings you to a beach cove – definitely look into that one if you’re not up for all of that! It’ll still be muddy (so be prepared for that) but much less of it. The final destination/end result was not worth the hike unless you are staying at the Punta Mona community.

Randonnée difficile. J'ai mis 7:30 de marche pour arriver au refuge. Les paysages changent radicalement, ils sont incroyablement magnifiques! Prévoir de l'eau, il fait très chaud.

Read some reviews that said “slippery in spots”. We found the trail to be 1/4 ankle deep mud that was very slippery. We made it about halfway before turning back. Not sure if this is common conditions for this trail. May or may not have been Wild life, too busy choosing my footing to look around.

Not a very exciting hike up and very hot when not in shade, but the falls are worth it!

Trail was a bit slippery. Freezing cold on top of the mountain. Bring rain gear, warm stuff and gloves! Tough hike all around but very enjoyable.

The falls are worth the effort of this hike. Start early because it gets sunny and hot fast. Most of the trail to the falls is uphill. There are steep areas with loose rocks. when we visited there were also muddy areas. There are areas with little shade. Bring protection from the sun and hydration. There is shade around the falls and the water is cool. It was fun to climb around the lower waterfall. We took some video footage of the hike and falls https://youtu.be/u4vGRo786b4

Trail was in relatively good condition. Hiked with wife and four kiddos (ages 10, 8, 4 and almost 2). Baby was carried. Steep spots in some places. Miss May point is absolutely stunning. Keep little ones in check. Several places to slip and fall.

Do exactly what Ray Schmidt says below, start in Puerto Vargas in the morning, then have a late lunch in Cahuita. Was perfect. Great hike. Took a little longer because we stopped and swam and spent a lot of time staring at monkeys. Lots of monkeys in the trees by the beach.

Absolutely beautiful views, full of beautiful flowers and wildlife if you're quiet enough. The hardest part is the very steep beginning, after that, moderate difficulty.

Did this trail with the wife and four kids (ages 10, 8, 4 and almost 2). The baby was carried, but the rest were troopers. Flat trail with lots of sand. I regretted wearing the hiking sandals. Beautiful wildlife and scenery. We saw toucans, squirrels, monkeys, lizards and my son almost grabbed hold of a tropical bird snake. This trail is a must-do if you're in the area. Do yourself a favor and ride the bus back to Cahuita. Especially if you have little children.

A coastal walk along a beautiful beach, the trail is flat and easy to navigate. The tide pools near the point are fun for the kids to play in. Pay attention to the sky behind you, storms can move in rapidly.

Definitely worth the effort! The weather is so uncomfortable and I was soaked before I got there but the waterfalls are incredible and the jungle is beautiful. Would definitely recommend.

Vraiment magnifique. C’était comme se balader dans une carte postale. On a vu plusieurs animaux: paresseux, chauve-souris, singes, tortue... On s’est baigné dans une mer cristalline.

Beautiful spot!! Try and get there as early as possible. For those taking the bus the first bit down to the parking lot is fine heading down but pretty tough coming back up, especially if it’s sunny and hot like it was for us! Amazing pool to swim in. Totally worth any payment! A must if you’re in the area.
