Braulio Carillo National Park is located in the Central Volcanic Range, the park is one of the largest protected areas in Costa Rica. It extends across almost 45,000 ha and includes seven different habits. The landscape has high mountains covered with forests, canyons, volcanoes, and waterfalls. This incredible landscape is home to more than 135 species of animals, 6000 species of trees and plants, and 500 types of birds. Visitors may see toucans, jaguars, tapirs and monkeys. Beware that the venomous viper, Bushmaster, also is found here. The important feature of the park is the orange stream, called Rio Sucio or ‘Dirty River’ which gets its name from the sulfur deposits from the volcano Irazu. There is a lot to do including several hiking trails throughout the park.
