Went with a tour group so it was a bit crowded just due to us! But the view from the lava field is amazing. We were fortunate to have a perfectly clear day with a stunning view of the volcano

We agree with everything others have written about the beauty of the trails. The fumaroles were a nice added touch and the rainforest is enchanting with challenging ups and downs. Plenty of wildlife activity . and gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape. We were alone on the trails and noted when we left that only 11 people had accessed the trails. We decided to try the Southern road to access the trails despite the warnings. What a mistake. DO NOT repeat our mistake. We almost made it to the bridge but came to a downhill section that is the worst piece of road we have ever seen. We parked the 4 wheel drive and hiked over the bridge and up to the summit and did the trails. All in about 650 metres of elevation and 14 Km of hiking .. What a day. Not bad for two people with a combined age of 140. The hiking in Costa Rica is the best we have experienced and will come back many times.

Not sure why this is listed as moderate. It’s short and easy but decent. Groomed trails, beautiful location.

Amazing hike. Trails are beautiful and really capture the rainforest feeling. The northern route along Río Peñas Blancas is well maintained and easy to access. DO NOT take the road along the southern shore of Río Peñas Blancas. This route requires you to cross a wooden hanging bridge that is in complete disrepair. The bridge is supposed to be closed, but neighboring properties keep removing the closure tape to continue use for their own purposes. The park employees were horrified to learn the bridge was still being used. DO NOT USE THE WOODEN HANGING BRIDGE. If you find yourself at the bridge, turn around and use the northern route. It only takes an additional 30 minutes and the park is well worth taking the extra time to visit.

Great trails in the rainforest. If you want adventure this is it! We used the directions from the All Trails app to get us to the trailhead. Let’s just say we were VERY glad to have a 4 wheel drive and high clearance vehicle. Probably wouldn’t have made it otherwise. If you go this route, when you’re around 10-15 from the trailhead make sure to take a RIGHT when you see the hand painted sign for the forest. We also went over a really scary hanging bridge on that route. We ended up taking different way out, which was less sketchy. Not sure where you get that route. When you drive up you’ll reach a lodge where you’ll pay $13 to hike the trails. TOTALLY worth it! We saw birds, frogs and armadillos. The waterfall was amazing. Vast and dense jungle and we didn’t see anyone else on the trails, which we like. We’d definitely go back.

We hiked this trail on a Sunday morning. it was not too crowded and we were able to see howler monkeys, a coati, lizards and interesting insects.

The marked trail doesn’t afford good views, being in tall reeds / woods almost all the way. Lots of tourists too. Not much wildlife viewing. Very easy and still nice. Much better is the shorter hike directly up slope to a shelter, shown as the short white path toward east on AllTrails map. Less traffic, saw a river of army ants, cute birds, orchids , and almost constant view of the volcano.

This short trail is honestly not worth the $15/person admission fee. I would have rated it three stars if it were not for the unbearable crowds. We got there right as the gates opened, but the trail was soon overrun with loud tour groups. We found that we were more likely to see interesting wildlife by simply walking along the side of the road. If you are an avid hiker and want to see an interesting volcanic area, I highly recommend Rincon over Arenal.

Easy and leisurely. Recommend good shoes if you plan on going to the lava area (just a bunch of rocks).

Very straightforward trail with a great viewpoint of the Arenal Volcano. Most days have low visibility, so keep that in mind. Great wildlife viewing opportunities on the trail as well. Very beautiful!

Very easy hike. You'll get a nice view of the Volcano. at the top as well as the lava flow paths from the past (look more rocky than anything)
