Went on the hike today (20/03/19)and it was amazing. Its pretty hard going after the waterfall especially on the way back. We used a guide who was incredibly knowledgeable and found some animals and plants we would have walked past. The walks starts off on a concrete path and then leads on to more rugged train. The views of the waterfall, 2 suspended bridges and lagoon are wonderful. Closes at 1730 and cost $20 with a guide - our guide was called Jorge Luis

Less of a hike and more step challenge. There are 500 steps down and then back up again, don't let this discourage you because it's a beautiful waterfall. We also went through the butterfly area and orchid garden although there wasn't alot of the flowers out. You can choose to go swimming should the mood take you. I enjoyed it. Be aware that it is warm and humid but there are a few seats on the way back up should you need them. It cost $18 to get in and was worth every penny

I did the lava trail today (20/03/19) and was pleasantly surprise. The trail was well kept. Not to many people. There was alot of birds, particularly in the first section with the fruit trees. Obviously lots of leaf cutter ants. It was $15 entry and you had use of a stick which was handy. We initially wanted to do the walk with the forest but because of time constraints we plumped for the lava trail. We arrived at 1530 and the man at the entry advised that we needed to be back by 1730 due to light. Closing time is 1730. Its a beautiful walk

This is something you should see ! It’s beautiful but it is very touristy so if your trying to get away from that, this is not the place. But if you want to see something spectacular put this on the list ! I would not create your trip around this for there are many more hikes to do in Costa Rica but if you can, go do it !

This is a great area to explore and it’s an awesome trail. The fee to enter the park is 4 dollars per person - don’t let that discourage you ! This is a must do trail in Costa Rica. Unfortunately I never got a clear view of the volcano due to weather but hiking through the forest and feeling the rain and warm wind on my face was incredibly refreshing.

Loved this hike! Nearly 3/4ths of the hike is root and mud scrambles, it’s difficult but so fun. Took us about 3 hours and 20 min to complete including 40 min of swimming/hanging out at the lake. Make sure to have good hiking shoe traction. Do not do this hike if you have limited hiking experience or have knee issues.

Impressive horsetail waterfall flowing over basalt columns and a carpet of moss. Loved having the opportunity to swim at the bottom. Heavy rain required us to leave the pool after a quick swim, but also kept most of the crowds away. The steps are in good condition and the orchid section makes for a nice stroll. Given the rarity of orchid blooms it was that much more impressive to encounter the occasional flower... on a tree stump (no less) and not in a pot of wood chips! $15 per person can add up for families, but I didn’t mind paying the tourist premium for myself and everything is very well maintained.

Beware: this trail closes at 2. We were accosted by someone at the parking lot who told us we needed to leave. Signs nearby corroborated this. Don’t waste 3 hours of your Costa Rican trip from La Fortuna without knowing this key piece of information.

I wish we were able to leave a “tip” instead of writing a review and being forced to choose stars. Indeed we arrived at 2:30.

They moved the dead body! Quite the challenging hike but well worth it.

Challenging hike but well worth the effort once that first glimpse of the lake! As the other reviews state, you'll need to pass barbwire, it's muddy, and you'll need your hands and feet for this one!

Beautiful tropical jungle with clear trails marked. Rounds by and near rivers, that are a bright blue in February when we were here. A 5 on a scale of 1-10 as far as difficulty. Some stairs involved. I didn’t bring enough water. Also wished I’d have brought food so I could stay for nearby on the way back hot springs.

This was a great hike. The colour of the water was amazing!! Trail was in good condition but it had rained a bit in the beginning of the walk which made it slippery in some spots. Definitely a hike worth doing. It was crowded and people can’t seem to get enough selfies which was annoying but still a great hike.

When it comes to difficulty/ reward ratio, this is perfect. It is absolutely not for the faint of heart or for those who are not physically fit. But if you are able to push past those last 2kms then you'll be greeted by the most beautiful untouched lake at the top of the volcano. On our way down however, we found a man in the ground who had a heart attack and died, so this is a hike that I'd only recommend if you're in good shape.

very easy hike...not much to see or experienced..

Moderate Trail, well maintained, easy to loop. Views are hit and miss with the Volcano.

Great trail with an excellent view of the volcano. There is a observation area at the base with rocking chairs.

Good trail well maintained. Some good, steep climbs to keep the heart rate up.
To hike, you must pay ($15USD each hiker).

Such a wonderful experience.

Beautiful waterfall and a nice place to take a dip in the water! Stairs have all been replaced since the last time I was there. Much nicer and easier to climb up and down the stairs now.

Beautiful waterfall. Easy paved walk on stairs.
Nice for a quick and easy adventure.
Bring a suit to swim at the bottom!

The waterfall itself is a majestic sight. If you are into waterfalls this is a good stop and people can dip in the plunge pool. Apparently there are lifeguards who will prevent swimmers from getting too close to the fall itself. But from a hiking / nature viewing perspective this is a rather boring place. Travel is confined to the 500+ stairs down. Very little space at the bottom. It seems all tourists to Costa Rica are at the bottom simultaneously! Other than some fish in the stream no wildlife was seems.

The marked trail doesn’t afford good views, being in tall reeds / woods almost all the way. Lots of tourists too. Not much wildlife viewing. Very easy and still nice. Much better is the shorter hike directly up slope to a shelter, shown as the short white path toward east on AllTrails map. Less traffic, saw a river of army ants, cute birds, orchids , and almost constant view of the volcano.

Great trail with family

This trail is officialy closed : barbed wires limits its entrence and sometimes a guard patrols there and ask you to leave. You can however get around the wires and hope that nobody guards the entry.
You can access the trail through a private path belonging to GreenLagoon cabinas (they dont explicitely warn you that the cero chato trail is closed but will charge you 5000 crc/ 10 usd entry fees) but there might be another way to access the trail.

The trail remains difficult : since its closed the path is not maintained and the forest is ALWAYS muddy so you mainly have to climb your way down to the lake (super steep and slippery). Took us 6h (1h of break included).

It however TOTALLY WORTH IT : funniest and most beautiful hike I ever did (plus you can swim in a volcano).

This 3.5 hours guided hike in the rainforest (in part on very high suspension bridges) was the highlight of our Costa Rica trip. Our guide (Gabriella) taught us a lot about the flora and fauna and got the kids interested through the whole hike. We spotted many interesting plants and animals (a snake, a tarantula and other big spiders, weird plants).

1st half is not really a hike - almost more like an urban path. So many people - makes it unlikely to spot any kind of fauna. Waterfalls are nice but very crowded. Last part has interesting views of the river. Took us 2.5 hours round-trip including stops and 10-minute wait each way at the footbridge near the end.
