Length: 1.8 mi • Est. 56 m
Half-day walking tour includes highlights of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. If walls could talk, visitors to the Forbidden City would hear tales of opulence beyond their wildest dream, from daily 100-course meals to harems of 9,000 concubines. Officially titled the Imperial Palace, the Forbidden City earned its common name from the fact that ordinary citizens weren't allowed to approach the complex during the 500 years of its use. After visiting the palace, get a different impression of China's rulers in the adjacent Tiananmen Square, where you can pay a visit to Mao Zedong himself. While some tourists choose to spend several days exploring the Forbidden City, those with limited time can see plenty with this half-day walk. The walk includes several main structures of the Forbidden City as well as the highlights of Tiananmen Square.Show more

Songjiang is a district of Shanghai. It is divided in two by the Huhang expressway. The northern part is the new town, Songjiang Xincheng. It is easily accessible, being at the end of Metro line 9. The southern part near the river is the old town, where all the historic sights are. The city is located around 30km to the south-west of central Shanghai and is connected to downtown areas by buses and metro line 9. The new metro line 22, also known as the Jinshan Railway, has several stops in Songjiang, but express trains bypass some of them. Songjiang District Central Park is a newly renovated area of Songjiang, and includes a large peaceful area surrounded by green grass, trees, and lakes. It is an excellent place to go to escape the hustle and bustle of the more crowded areas of Shanghai. Show more

The historic summer retreat of China's emperors. The Summer Palace was the retreat of emperors for centuries, gradually enlarged and repaired after taking beatings in the Second Opium War (1856-60) and the Boxer Rebellion (1900). It's now one of Beijing's best-known tourist destinations, so in the summer it's crowded with visitors looking to catch a breeze around Kunming Lake. The palace is usually empty if you visit in winter, but the biting cold is the price you pay for uninterrupted views.Show more
