12/2018 trail closed at lake but still worth it. Great flowers and views. It's 12 kms and 510m of uphill roundtrip to lake not 15 miles.

As advertised, this trail is steep for the first 2.5 kilometers. Afterward, it moderately and gradually winds through a colorful valley with grazing horses, colorful finches that seem to accompany you, hawks and large condors flying overhead. At about kilometer 12.5, you will reach a small but beautiful pond that reflects El Morado mountain and the surrounding snow covered range. Travel 2 more kilometers and you will reach what's left of the San Francisco glacier. With majestic mountains of all colors surrounding you, the reflecting pond and snowed covered range in front, the place is a feast for the eyes!
It takes about 4 hrs. up and back to complete the hike (not counting breaks)
The 2.5 hour ride from downtown Santiago can be slow at times due to traffic, but as you near the park, take your time and enjoy the waterfalls and changing topography--on a clear day it is spectacular!
To consider: $10 +/- (clp only) to enter, no shade, bring water and snacks, prepare for changing temperatures and always windy conditions, trekkin poles a must for the decent back to the entrance. Also, the paved road washes out near the entrance but, with caution, it is still navigable. Enjoy!
