You’re better off the go out & back from Bay Bulls - it’ll be approximately 25.4km (12.7km to the Spout) in total but it’s far more scenic!

Part 2 of our "lost day" that started on the Blackhead Path. I recall the trail itself being well maintained, but I have no recollection of its grade of difficulty. The most challenging part of this section was the wind and rain.

I tested two things for the ECT: 1) hiking with an umbrella (MyTrail), and 2) using thin wool socks (Darn Tough Merino Ultra-Lights) with trail runners (La Sportiva Raptors) and gaiters (Dirty Girls) instead of traditional hiking boots.

The wind had its way with the umbrella on this section, but my torso remained dry all the way to Maddox Bay. Actually the unbrella serves better for the intense sunlight on the exposed sections of the ECT!

The runners and socks dried quickly for the next day's hike. I'm now a believer in the drain and dry approach - plenty of bogs on these trails. Dirty Girls are very minimalist gaiters designed for runners. While they did their job in keeping debris out my shoes, a sturdier version might have been more helpful for moving through brush.

After 12 miles of rough weather, the coffee shop in Petty Harbor was just what the doctor ordered. Owner Karen is an angel and helped us find a place to stay that evening. Two lessons from that day: Newfoundlanders are the most hospitable people on earth and camping areas along the trail are rarer than you might expect.

The "convenient store" in town is not suitable for resupplying unless you want to subsist solely on potato chips and pizza burgers of questionable origin. They do have beer though!

Petty Harbor, itself, it very pleasant and worth exploring. The Richard Harris movie Orca was filmed there.

Beautiful view and great trail. It's clearly well maintained and very well marked.

Do not attempt this trail in the rain as the old dirt road turns into a stream for most of it. However, this is a nice length trail to take the dog on and will be fabulous in drier weather.
