Stunning. Challenging and technical with lots of verticals. We left our car at China Beach and took the west coast shuttle to Port Renfrew. We camped at Little Kuitsche Creek, Chin Beach and Bear Beach. They were all lgreat places to camp... Lots of space, pretty level. The forest hiking was lovely and the beaches were stunning.
Definitely use gaitors...there's a lot of mud and boggy parts. We went in early July. The trail is very wild. There was a hornet's nest in a mud bog just south of Sombrio so be careful.

Scenic coastal route one way followed by a forest path and road back to the parking lot. Very enjoyable and not too difficult, as long as you're prepared for navigating amongst roots and rocks one way and elevation change the other.

An easy walk/hike once you’re on the pipeline. Gorgeous scenery and very few people. One of my favourites.

Read the reviews! I did this hike back in 2016 with my husband and my brother. It is one of the best day hikes I’ve done in Canada but it wasn’t easy as many of these reviews have also stated. I’d say moderate to difficult. It is also a 10 hike along the coast. We had a gorgeous spring day for this and I have terrific memories of blue skies, sea life and the sound of crashing waves. A very memorable hike! Shout out to the blog ‘HikeBikeTravel’ for this most excellent suggestion.

easy, pretty, nice little informational placards, nice beaches. good for families with small kids

I'm sorry I know that this is suppose to be a review but I sadly had my hiking partner cancel on me last minute and was wondering if anyone is interested in hiking this July 13th/18? I have been wanting to hike it since my first island trip last year!!

amazing! already planning on making it an annual trip. 4 days from china beach to botanical. use the west coast shuttle bus which made it that much easier! reccomend to everyone I know to do this hike.

note that markers from 15km-20km were not visible for us. beggining of June! hopefully been fixed as they were doing a lot of maintenance

happy hiking!

Amazing beauty and lots of wildlife. Whales, sea lions, bears, sea otters and tons of marine life. It’s great to fall asleep to the sound of waves hitting the beach. My favorite backpacking trail.

WOW. what a beautiful change of scenery from the typical west coast mountains. Had to do this trail last minute as our original plan went sideways after a forest fire caught. No regrets though! Spent 5 days in total on the trail, 4 nights. ALOT of up and down up and down across all the creeks. Very minimal trail maintenance done on this path, therefore walked through several bogs, stepped over broken stairs/ladders and opted for scrambling rather than using old rope handholds. End of July and weather was perfect. Ensure you have waterproof boots as there is mud everywhere. Not as much beach walking as expected, more inland dirt trails.

Short hike but gains elevation quickly. Great views at the top on a sunny day.

Very beautiful and moderate trail!

Hiked in August 2017 and Loved this trail.
-If you're on the fence about it DO IT! You'll love it.
-A more technical and challenging trail then some but by no means hard in my opinion. Maybe not the best suited for a beginner but well suited for those who have hiked before but are new to multi day trips. Or for those avid hikers who want an easy break with gorgeous west coast views.
-Had time to spare so hiked it in 4 days 3 nights but could have easily hiked it in 3 days.
-Breathtaking scenery and nature to absorb.
-Campsites were amazing, either along the ocean or on the forest. They fill up around dinner time as most people come off the trail so they fill fast then
-A mixture of ground paths and man made areas which include wide wood stairs and foot paths. Sometimes the man made stairs were harder to climb then just the trail.
-A lot of elevation changes and muddy spots but manageable. Having a hiking pole or trusty stick is crucial for testing muddy patches and helping with balance to avoid a dunk in the mud
-All campsites had bear proof bins for food and an outhouse (except for one that was out of order)
-Many streams for water filling, just make sure you bring some form of water treatment

Easy 13km, one way from becher bay to iron mine bay. 6 hours including about 1 hour worth of stops. Beautiful with the fog rolling in and out.

We took beechy head trail and then connected back via this trail. It was awesome but not easy. Kids 10 and 4 loved it because of all the rocks to climb and the variety of view and trees and beaches, and it was a bit dangerous in spots:)

Nice hiking trail - I followed the trail running recommendation which I do not agree with... hiking yes, running no

I hiked this trail in four days from Botanical Beach to China Beach by myself. It far exceeded my expectations! This was my first multi-day backpacking adventure. The trail was challenging at parts but the views and old growth forests were well worth it. The campsites were very nice with toilet paper and hand soap in the outhouses. There was a lot of traffic on the trail at this time of year which was great for me because I made a lot of friends. I highly recommend this trail!

My first multi night trail. We did it in 3 days 2 nights and it was awesome. If we do it again I would definitely take a little more time to enjoy the small things a little more. We did it in late July to early August and it was perfect weather. Plenty of water sources and camping was fun. Would definitely recommend it!

Great trail, lots of great lookouts and beaches.

Trail is amazing and beautiful but definetly should not be rated as easy . The reviews we read led us to believe this was an easy hike along the coast when in fact it is very difficult . Narrow ledges at times with a great distance to fall , and a lot of ups and downs over difficult terrain . The trail took us 7.5 hours to complete and we hike all the time . I was concerned at comments stating this trail would be safe for young children and as a mother I greatly disagree with this . A loss of footing in many places could cause severe injury . The hike was one of the most beautiful I have ever done but the rating definetly should be changed from easy to at least moderate if not difficult . I don't know if you rated the trail based on the inner trails through the forest but we took the actual Coast Trail along the rock bluffs and it is not easy

We only hiked from China beach to sombrio but none the less it was an amazing experience. The trail is extremely muddy so I would recommend wearing gaiters on it. Don't camp to close to the rising tides!

Fantastic hike! Coastal and forest!

The best trail for day hikes. It's fairly easy to Beechers point and then you start hiking up and down the headlands. Absolutely not easy. Can be quite the climb. We have done the entire coastal hike in 4.5 hours at a hard pace. Absolutely love this hike .

This is one of my favourite trails and has been called one of Canada's best day hikes. I have never seen the Coast Trail called a loop nor has it ever been called easy for all skill levels. As an experienced hiker, I don't think that this description is accurate and quite frankly, dangerous.
The Coast trail is actually a 10k day hike. Most people choose to leave a car at one of the trail heads (Aylard Farm or Pike Road) and then use a second car to drive to the second trailhead for departure.
It is normally called a challenging or difficult hike; lots of ups and downs, some scrambling, trail is not always clearly marked, roots/rocks and steep sections.
Allow anywhere between 5-8 hours to complete. The Iron Mine Bay side is considered more challenging and less used. Aylard Park area is well used.
Even though the Coast Trail itself is not a loop, in East Sooke Park there are numerous transverse trails as well two longitudinal trails; the Coast and Interior Trail. Combining portions of these trails makes it easy to create some really great loops.
The trail is beautiful, gorgeous scenery and highly recommend

I'm glad I did the whole thing to learn about great overnights or day trips, but I wouldn't repeat the whole trail again. China Beach to Sombrio gets you a great trip.

Great hike that goes down to the ocean and tidal pools when the tide is low. Interesting tree formations.
