good grind

A beautiful place in the heart of lower mainland. The trail goes through lush green forest and several beautiful streams, that ends at a small and quite lake. We hiked on November 16, a sunny Friday, surprisingly it wasn’t busy at all; met only one other couple in the whole trip, carrying bear bells was a good idea. The distance from the Trail head to the lake View Point, shown on my app was 6.5 km, so it is more than 13 km two way. Same is Elevation Gain: As trail goes up and down the hill several times to cross the streams, you should add at least 100 m extra to what it shows the elevation gain on the map. The slops are not so steep, that makes the climbing easy snd pleasant. I will suggest using waterproof hiking shoes and poles, as you will face few puddles and wet slippery places on the trail.
To find the Trail on google, search Sumas Mountain Trail Head. Coming from Vancouver at Highway 1, exit at exit 95 and turn left on Whatcom Rd, and quickly after crossing highway bridge turn right on N Parallel Rd. after two and a half km turn left to Sumas Mountain Rd. And stay on Upper Sumas Mountain Rd. The winding road will run about 9.5 km and then turns into a gravel road. That is where the trail head is. After coming down about 100 m on gravel road you will see a wooden pole on the right side of the road with very small (6 inch) green signs, showing bear, dog on leash etc. The gravel road is wide enough at that point to find a road side parking..

Always a good hustle to the top! The view is worth every minute.

Did this hike with my dad today and ventured on past Chadsey to the East lookout. Such an amazingly dense forest to wander through! The light shining through the forest and fog looked magical. I will share some pictures from today too.

Do this hike ATLEAST once!

Good workout, trail is eroding quite a bit in places but is still in pretty good condition.
Quite muddy and slippery when it rains, I suggest using poles and possibly even crampons if attempting after/during any decent rainfall.

my wife and I hike Abby grind once a week. a good place near by for our cardio exercise.

I did this hike today and the last time was about 4 years ago.... it has become very eroded, a lot of the trail has been blown out and lots of silty sand. Great view at the top but some trail love needs to happen here before I go back.

Beautiful trail, perfect for beginners

I need to try this one again as we came across a young bear in the cave about 4ft from us. This was about 2.5 km in. He was terrified but we didn't want to risk him charging or an angry mama, so we turned around.
Could be better markers as we were unsure which way to go at several points.

I loved the experience

Lovely trail with good elevation gain

A good hike to start off the hiking season. steady challenge all the way up. Lots of flowers and pleasant smells. View was okay for me. kind of blocked by a tree or two.

Great beginner hike.

Great day on the trails! Seemed to be pretty busy - 6 cars parked at the road and about 10 people encountered while on the trail. Overall, peaceful and well marked. Trail is fairly narrow throughout, take caution on the loose rocks. Would do it again!

Makes for a good workout, but trail is rather dusty and viewpoint is just alright.

Easy to access but there is no formal trailhead so parking is just off the side of the road. The trail is well laid out and offers links to other trails. Beautiful little lake. I was glad to have the fully paid app as I wandered onto another trail and needed to rely on the app to gat back on track.

This is definitely a grind, it’s not too long of a hike, but it can be tough if you’re not use to going straight up, but it’s worth to try at least once. Pretty view of farm lands. The parking is next to the Abby gun range off exit #3.

Really liked this trail. It was a good workout to the lake. Had our friends dog with us and only encounter hikers on our way up to the lake. We were at the lake alone. A great hike and very well marked.

1st time doing the trail, good workout and not as hard as The Grouse Grind.

Did this trail today. Found the trail easily marked and easy to follow. The trail itself was easy to navigate and the elevation grew slowly enough to be an easy hike. Three 6 year olds and a 4 year old managed the climb, and two kids made it in back carriers (the back carriers are convenient, but beware of trail obstacles you may need to crawl under af times). .

Mosquitos were bad at the lake, and the lake wasnt clear for swimming at all (my dog stuuuuunk after his dip). Was a bit disheartened by the number of off-leash dogs we encountered as well as owners not picking up after their pets.

My garmin logged well over the 9kms (closer to 13 to the lake).

Would do again. The views of the valley between the trees are gorgeous.

Did this hike today. Was feeling good so I went on around Lake Chadsey and on up to the Sumas summit. I ended up logging 9.6miles (15.45km). About 3000 feet (914m) in elevation climbed. This was all according to the Garmin watch. I stopped at the lake which was empty for a rest and foot soak. This was a beautiful hike. All in all it took 4 hours at a fairly strong pace. I would plan for 4 hours to get to the lake and back. Canada is beautiful!

always fun but dusty

It’s a really good hike...short but a good workout!!!!

Great trail, love the incline. Soft dirt and dryness in the summer make for a dirty climb- wear pants- not shorts. Did the hike in just over an hour with a 50lb kid on the back and a 6 year old hiking (and a golden retriever). Good city view when the sky is clear.

Great workout

Great hike to get some elevation training. Super dusty which made it a little unstable and difficult to run but otherwise quite enjoyable.

Trail was beautiful and very rustic. Lake was empty and had the place to ourselves. Was lovely but not an amazing view and little views throughout the hike.

This is an amazing trail for a great workout.. especially running down the trail. Best to go early in the morning before the traffic gets too busy. My dog loves it too!

Nice hike that gets your heart rate up fast.. and it's not that far outside Chilliwack
