The Dachstein! This is a small massif 55 km south-east of Salzburg, the Dachstein is a limestone massif that rises to 2996m; very steep walls when they are not vertical, surround three small glaciers on its N slope. In short, a famous place for climbers and a region classified by UNESCO as World Heritage. The beginning of the walk is first on a steep path in the forest that joins Schleifsteinbrüche, a small alp with a series of very pretty wooden chalets at 1344 meters altitude. Then the trail crosses over 400 meters a flat and sensitive wetland so that the route is usually on boards to the chalets of Gruben Alm where there is a gravel track and rather downhill that we follow for more than half an hour. And then, it is again a very steep path that joins, 200 meters higher, Plankenstein Alm, a very pretty alpine meadow in a beautiful setting with a few chalets where some forty cows graze. A last effort took us to the summit of the Hohe Scheibe (still called Plankensteinhohe) at 1659 m, in fact a grass bump that is a beautiful belvedere on the mountains around and especially to the south, towards the peaks of the Dachstein. The return will be more or less by the same route to Schleifsteinbrüche where we take a new steep path, reach the bottom of the valley at Gosau Hintertal where a small tarmac path along the Gosauerbach takes us back to our starting point.Show more

Relatively easy mountain hike, but sometimes narrow and steep paths, mainly on the forest road. Starting / end point: valley station of the Gosaukamm cable car at Vorderen Gosausee. Access from Gosau by bus. Driveway to the mountain station (1.5 hours on foot). Resting possibilities: Gablonzer hut, Breiningalm, Zwieselalm, possibly Edtalm. On foot or the cable car - that's the question, if you want to see the Gosaukamm up close. From the cable car mountain station you will hike on the wide path to the nearby Gablonzer Hütte. From there, follow the directions to the right towards Gosau, under the ski lift through and to a turnoff straight ahead, then turn left and past the Sonnenalm on the promising Zwieselalmhöhe (lift stations). Beyond again downhill (you could also bypass the hill on the left) and right steeply to Zwieselalm. Here turn right, at the front end of the meadow turn left and follow the steep forest path no. 622 to the junction of the Herrenweg (marking no. 611), which descends directly from the Gablonzer hut. On this left to the nearby Edtalmgatterl: The Herrenweg pulls right through the forest slope (ski lift) down to a forest road. Follow this to the left to Falmbergalm. Shortly after the following way divorces the Herrenweg left, pulls flat through the ski area under the Hornspitz and then reaches the forest road again, on which you will continue downhill. The turnoff to Gosau-Mittertal remains unnoticed, but after the Vorderel Glaselbach you will also turn right and walk down to Calvary. Right over the stairs to the village street and on this left to the center of Gosau-Vordertal. After the cemetery turn right to the school, down to the main street (bus stop).Show more
