#1 - Goldegg Loop
Goldegg, Salzburg, AustriaLength: 8.5 mi • Est. 4 h 13 m
Home of the 'romantic lake' - cross-country skiing & hiking through farm villages near Salzburg.
Salzburg fills with thousands of visitors each year seeking concert festivals, 'Sound of Music' tours and chocolate Mozart balls. But few will hear of, yet alone visit, this peaceful village within an hours drive south of the heaving Austrian city.
Goldegg is indeed a gem and a bit of a local secret, mostly visited by Austrian residents and German visitors crossing the border from nearby Munich.
In summer, they come for cultural events in the 14th century castle, golf and swimming in the 'romantic lake'. In winter, it becomes a centre for downhill & cross-country skiing. Hiking is great at any time.
Some of the walking trails can be closed by winter weather, but this one remain reliably accessible because (after circling the local lake) it largely follows minor village roads that see little traffic.
