Just finished this incredible hike a couple weeks ago and definitely recommend it. For those wondering about the river crossing in Mallacoota, we crossed at low tide and the water level was less than waist height with no strong current. We were a bit uncertain about crossing before we got there because there's not much information online about the feasibility of crossing it, but decided we wouldn't book the boat and just risk it. This was a great decision in the end because it took us 1min to cross with our packs on and it was a breeze. We crossed at the Mallacoota end of the channel. I'm not sure how high the water gets at high tide, but if you cross at low tide it's easily done as of December 2019.

As described. We did it with the kids, youngest 11, in 5 days. Challenging, but beautiful. Sea eagles, Osprey and Wedgies hunting ducks were a highlight. So were the dolphins. Plan carefully, as per parks guidelines, for water. We found fresh water at Table creek, the bunyip hole and flowing from the rocks at Cape Howe. Also at lake Barracoota, though some evidence of questionable toileting practice made us collect it well away from camp. We filtered it too.
