on Mount 'Alava Trail

I did this hike today - I really enjoyed it. There is a small car park by the hike starting point. The path is vehicle-wide all the way to the top. Waterproof shoes recommended as the (often wet) grass is a bit high at times. At one point, near the start of the hike, the app showed me walking off the trail for a while, but I contiued following the only path and eventually got back om track. Be careful when going up the stairs by the top of the mountain; some steps are in bad shape.

I would recommend this trail if you are not afraid of heights and want a Little Rock scrambling to get down to the water.

Nice 3 hour 15 minute hike with stunning views from the top.

I would consider this trail difficult after it rains because of how slippery it is. The beginning is a little steep but then the grade becomes manageable for the remainder of the trail. You end of at the top of the ridge overlooking Pago Pago harbor and Rainmaker Mountain. There were a few coconut crabs along the trail and sensitive plants that have leaves that quickly close if you touch them. The views were amazing from the top. There is a small cover building that allows you to take a break from the sun/rain.

Drove past the house to what was probably not a pull-out for cars. Rocky walk to a few informational signs put up by the park. Short walk to the rocky beach afterwards. Better views looking back while on the road.

Absolutely unbelievable views from the top of this moderately difficult hike.

Short walk to the water’s edge where waves crash hard against the shoreline. No problems with dogs on the way in and a few barked as we left. Just stay off their property and motion like you are picking up a rock to throw at them and they will keep their distance. 5/9/18
