Unfriendly dogs can be a big challenge in American Samoa, so we drove past the last house. We pulled over a bit too early to park because the map indicated that we were already about half way down the trail. There is amole parking where the three informational signs. The beach had large rocks so it would be challenging without appropriate footwear. There were lovely views of Pola Island were a very short walk from the parking area. We met the high talking chief on the beach who warned us not to get too close to the water due to strong waves and currents.

After 62 national parks and hiking 100's of trails, some day hikes and many multiple nights I would put this in my bottom 10. The trail is moderate even with the slippery rock after it rains. the bird sounds are amazing. BUT this could be so much more. it is kind of a boring hike. 10 foot wall of green on both sides of the trail. There are maybe 3 or 4 good viewpoints when with some planning there could be many more. The view at the top was disappointing. The NPS in their infinite wisdom to not ever harm nature, have let plants start to block the view point about 25 to 30%. My less than 5' tall wife had to climb on the wall for the view.

on Mount 'Alava Trail

I did this hike today - I really enjoyed it. There is a small car park by the hike starting point. The path is vehicle-wide all the way to the top. Waterproof shoes recommended as the (often wet) grass is a bit high at times. At one point, near the start of the hike, the app showed me walking off the trail for a while, but I contiued following the only path and eventually got back om track. Be careful when going up the stairs by the top of the mountain; some steps are in bad shape.

I would recommend this trail if you are not afraid of heights and want a Little Rock scrambling to get down to the water.

Nice 3 hour 15 minute hike with stunning views from the top.

I would consider this trail difficult after it rains because of how slippery it is. The beginning is a little steep but then the grade becomes manageable for the remainder of the trail. You end of at the top of the ridge overlooking Pago Pago harbor and Rainmaker Mountain. There were a few coconut crabs along the trail and sensitive plants that have leaves that quickly close if you touch them. The views were amazing from the top. There is a small cover building that allows you to take a break from the sun/rain.

Drove past the house to what was probably not a pull-out for cars. Rocky walk to a few informational signs put up by the park. Short walk to the rocky beach afterwards. Better views looking back while on the road.

Short but strenuous trail. The beginning is a moderate switchback up the hill then ladders and ropes going down the back side. The trail leads to a secluded, rocky beach that has good bird viewing and scenery. Could have been in the jurassic era. The climb back up the ladders was more difficult than I thought it would be; added an extra 15mins than what I had planned. Well worth it though.

Absolutely unbelievable views from the top of this moderately difficult hike.

Short walk to the water’s edge where waves crash hard against the shoreline. No problems with dogs on the way in and a few barked as we left. Just stay off their property and motion like you are picking up a rock to throw at them and they will keep their distance. 5/9/18
