Very pretty to walk along the shoreline, the docks, foot bridges to watch the boats and those picnicking. Love anyplace that welcomes our walking our dogs. Interesting historic markers. Navy band and fireworks were a lovely surprise for our family entertainment. Sadly a bit of trash, but mostly clean.
Great trails along the water, but it was very buggy! Seriously had to keep mouths hit cuz the flies, dragonflies & Nats were dive bombing us in the whole walk. At the end we stopped to stretch in a shady grassy latch and found 2 ticks in me! Just be prepared with bug repellant!
Not being from the area, the trail head was a bit challenging to find as we arrived from across the Potomac via zodiac tender. Luckily a park ranger directed us to the location at the North end of the upper parking lot. This is a great trail hike, full of history with good interpretive information along the way. We highly recommend this easy hike. Learn about Robert E. Lee's father's homestead. Good views of the Potomac.
I walked the Bushey Point/Powell's Creek, starting from the Bushey Point trailhead and looping the Powell's Creek trail. Total distance of the two is about 3 miles. The trails are well maintained, easy to walk, and well marked. I had my two dogs with me on a sunny Saturday morning. There were a few other folks (runners and dog walkers) on the trail. NOTE: The trail is in Leesylvania State Park and access to the park is $5.00 per day or you can purchase a year long pass for $36.00.
