Clearly visible, gentle sloping trail. Took a ten-year-old and our dog and everyone had fun. 2 hours. We are all out of shape (except the dog) and we made it just fine! :)

Loved the view, but went down a trail that didn't end where I parked.. not too far down the road but be aware that theres more than just one trail up and down :)

Beautiful quick hike! Hiked up and down the wapack from 119. Took about 2 hrs. Great views for a small mountain. Saw a couple of red hawks at the summit, flying so close I could see their eyes! Saw 7 other hikers total on the trail, a couple of milk snakes, and many birds.

It depends on which loop you take. We took the larger loop going up, and the shorter loop coming down. The short loop is definitely steeper for a more advanced hike. The view at the top was wonderful it was clear enough we saw Boston skyline. Good trail

Be warned, this will take a lot longer than you think! Yes, it's 21.4 miles so it's going to be long. However, with the constant change in terrain and elevation, the speed of your hike will be very slow, and at times, very in enjoyable. With all that said, there are some very great scenic spots along this long trail. Not something I would do all the time, but I would probably do it again next year.

This hike technically starts at the parking area on Rte 119 in Ashburnham, MA across from Old Pierce Rd. and is the southern trail-head for the Wapack Trail ( a contraction of Watatic and North Pack Monadnock coined by the trail's founders in 1922) whose terminus is 21.9 mi. north at the northern base of North Pack Monadnock. The 3 mile loop referred to herein begins at the parking lot on Rte. 119, and ascends gradually the southwest slopes of Watatic. At .3 mi. the trail intersects with the State Line Trail, which bears left and re-connects with the Wapack .9 mi north; but the preferred way to the summit is right, on the Wapack Trail. It is a short distance up, mostly traversing the slope, over rock ledges and along a stone wall. The footing is sure, but the trail is moderate at times: it is not easy all the way up. The summit is achieved via pretty, grassy edged paths which have leveled off once there. Beautiful views for a 1,800 ft. summit, and less than a half mile to the east, a protruding additional lower peak, East Watatic provides even better views: Wachusett to the west, Temple, Pack Monadnock and North Pack Monadnock to the northwest. The return loop brings you back over the true summit and down the north elbow of the Wapack Trail over Nutting Hill Ledge (1.0 mi.), which has varied and very pretty terrain, to the intersection of State Line Trail (bears left off Wapack) which takes you .9 mi. south back to the trailhead on Rte. 119. With a leisurely lunch on the eastern peak, a wonderful 3 hour hike!

Great day hike with fantastic views! Gets a little crowded, so avoid weekends or start later than 1pm
