Bought a bike for exercise and decided to give this trail a try and started from the Baldwin end. Unfortunately, it was two days after hurricane Matthew tore through the area. LOTS of leaf litter on the trail made it seem like an offroad trail. There was a HUGE tree fallen at an angle across the trail barely a quarter of a mile from the start. You could get under it with your bike, but just barely. Trail cleared up much better after that and was a really pretty ride. Made it to the old train station before turning around. Will definitely be back after the leaves and trees have been cleared away.
I've been hiking/jogging this trail for years and so far it's my favorite in Florida. Beautiful scenery and connects to other trails for longer hikes. The bugs are bad in the summer but that is to be expected on any trail in Florida. Be sure to visit Fort Caroline while in the area.
I have been running these trails since the early 80s. This was before the Preserve days. The pictured trails are no where near 21 miles. You have to be creative to get 7+ miles out of the course. If you run the inner white loop it is 3.5 miles. If you add the outer (far west loop) that adds 2.2 miles for a total of 5.7, which is usually the distance we run when we go out there. Keep in mind that yellow flies are out starting the beginning of May until the end of September. These are the some of the best trails in Jax area (no roots to trip you or cause you to turn an ankle). Motor vehicles are not allowed on the trails. The route is a little sandy, but always a pleasant run.
