Horse Mountain Trail is a 7.2 mile lightly trafficked trail located near Daniel, Wyoming. The trail is rated as difficult and primarily used for hiking.
Directions from Big Piney: Travel north on Hwy. 189 to Daniel Junction. Turn west on State Hwy. 354. From the Forest boundary on North Horse Creek Road #10389, continue west about 1 1/2 mile from the guard station until you see an old range pole on the north side of the road in a space in the willows.
The trail up to the peak of Horse Mountain was challenging, but well worth it. The weather that day included sunny skies, rain, sleet, snow, and gusty wind (not surprisingly, the higher we climbed, the windier it got). The wild flowers were in full bloom and were absolutely beautiful (check them out in one of the photos I posted), as were the views from the top. We didn't see another person the whole day (although there were some relatively fresh orange peels at the top that didn't look more than a day old). Great day hike; make sure to dress in layers that can be easily removed/added along the way!
