Black Mountain Lookout Trail is a 3.4 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Dayton, WY that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as difficult. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible from June until October.
The Black Mountain Trail is an approximately 4 mile (round trip) out and back trail, and is primarily used for hiking. You will also see the occasional mountain biker or atv (can only get part-way up). This trail pays off in a big way when you reach the top. The old lookout tower has amazing views.
Great hike, just a short trip though. Worth the effort.
just did this trail today, we drove up as far as the Black Mountain sign. From there it is approximately 1 mile up hill all the way. Lots of rocks on the trail and the last part going up to the look out required a little rock climbing. Beautiful views at the end.
Nice tree lined hike with cute little meadows and flowers along. Amazing views from the peak, well worth the last distance that does get slightly difficult due to steep and rocky. Need a 4x4 to get up 222 to the trailhead so we just hiked the 1 mi. road.
Not much to see until you reach the top, but when you do it sure is worth it. Trail is actually only a mile out and a mile back if you actually park at the trail head, but the FR 222 is pretty washed out so you may want to walk from where FR 16 and FR 222 meet if you don't have fourwheel drive and good ground clearance. All in a it was a nice quick hike. Fairly steep, but not incredibly difficult. Recommend to go on a warm and not so windy day.
This trail is well maintained. Black Mountain appears to be the highest peak on the eastern side of the northern portion of the Bighorns, and so the views from the lookout tower are absolutely stunning! This is a must if you're in this area! Watch the weather though; it moves in quick sometimes!
