This trail is definitely not as popular as West Tiger Mountain Trail #3 which means you'll have a little more privacy. It is a constant uphill climb all one way and you are rewarded with some great views of Mount Rainier and the South Sound. Overall, the hike itself is a big lackluster.
6/15/2016 (Wednesday) - Solo, 2:00 - 6:00, 8 miles, 56-60F, mostly cloudy with sun breaks and blue skies. I go up via Master Link and Quick Link (one-way upward for bikers) and down via Predator (one-way downward for bikers, not open to hikers, steep, rugged, dangerous if bikes dashing down). Master Link is relatively new, gently graded with numerous switchbacks, comfortable for hiking. East Tiger southern slope (all the trails I passed) seems being engulfed by forest fire many years ago, littered with decayed trumps and trunks. East Tiger summit features view toward the southwest direction, one can see Mt Rainier if weather is fine. This area is currently used mostly by bikers.
Nothing extremely spectacular about this hike. We took the road most of the way up and trails on the way down. It was littered with people on bikes and workers flying down the hill in cars. Honestly, it's a good workout trail if you live close. Otherwise, find a different trail if you're looking for something a little more serene and remote.
This hike was straight up on a gravel maintenance road. The views were amazing at the top, but it was a steep trek trying to get there. Great workout!
hoped on trail to east tiger mountain from middle tiger mountain and each trail has the classic northwest scenery, plus the bonus of this trail is watching out for bikers humming down the mountain. Most of the bikers were very nice, letting me know how many people in their group so I could keep an eye out for all the bikers. Good view from East Tiger viewpoint. stayed off the gravel dirt road most of the way up provided me with some beautiful views.
If you just want to get some hiking and exercise then the trail is great for it. All uphill and you'll definitely break a sweat and work your body. As far as the experience of the trail, one word comes to mind. Blah! I immediately recalled the much more interesting Little Si or even the Cougar Mountain trails. I also immediately wanted to hike the much more popular West Tiger Mountain #3 trail and see if it was not only better but worth the hype. What saves this hike from being a complete disaster is you do get an amazing view of Mount Rainier and the South Puget Sound at the vista. It is really beautiful and I was glad to see and photograph it, but this is still a "I did it one time trail and I will not be back." This is Washington of course, and we simply have way better trails, no need to waste precious time. If you want to see a different view of Rainier and want some good cardio, this would be for you. But, there are way better views of Rainier to be had around the state and much more interesting hikes to be had.
