this lake is not in Orting, it's up past Carbinado
Amazingly beautiful place!
Check to make sure the snow is melted before going.
Went on a cloudy Memorial Day weekend hike, started at the Mowich Lake trailhead, up to the lake then looped on the gravel road back to the station. Trail was pretty nice, only saw a couple people in the morning so not too busy. Lots of beautiful cascades and waterfalls, but also lots of fallen logs to scramble over which were a little slippery. Lake was absolutely beautiful and crystal clear at the end of the trail, still at least a couple feet of snow at the campsite and the first mile or so back down the road.
It's a real tough hike if your not used to them. Th says 6.1miles which seems to go on forever. The lake is as food as any at the end though to make it all worth it.
Mowich is beautiful, the water is crystal clear and not to cold that you can't go swimming in it. It's so calming and peaceful there is little meadows surrounding the water as well amazing hiking trails that lead up to stunning views of the mountain. It's a great place to go if you're looking for adventure and a nice place to take your family or a group of buddies camping for the weekend.
The lake was absolutely gorgeous on our Anniversary! The trail around the lake was fun and friendly. nice camping and bathroom facility. No stamp at the ranger station for my wife's parks passport cancellation. Road to trail was a test on our suspension(~10 mile of logging road.) I don't know how sedans made it in one piece.
beautiful view at the top
My brother and I parked at the gate (which was closed.) The trail leading to Mowich Lake had a bridge washed out 3.5 miles in so we were forced to hike the road the remaining 5 miles to the lake. It was a gradual uphill...nothing serious. We passed the shortcut labeled "Grindstone Trail" and continued on the road which had little snow til near the top. After arriving at Mowich, we walked to Lakeside Trail around and took some pictures. It was an absolutely gorgeous day to be out and about. Spray Park, Eunice Lake and Tolmie Peak Trails all intersect here at Mowich so for those looking for an overnight stay, camp at Mowich and day hike from there. The Campground itself was nice. Sand beds next to picnic tables was the norm and it had bathrooms and bear boxes to boot. Overall, it was a nice place that had a relatively easy hike to get to. Ill definitely be going back and exploring the other trails.
From here there is also a great hike to Eunice like with a lookout. A very scenic view!
Summer or winter this is fun for all. Have done both with the kids. Not much available past Buckley so grab your supplies before leaving. Small general store in Wilkeson provided our lunch of power bars, jerky, and nutter butters on our last trip.
