Fort Canby State Park is a 4.5 mile out and back trail located near Ilwaco, WA and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round.
It was awesome. I'll do it again....
This "trail" does not exist as named. After talking with a ranger the best I could figure this is a combination of 3 trails. First enter Cape Disappointment State Park, pay fee, then go to first stop sign and turn right. Just past tent area on right is a small gravel parking area on left with signs and monuments. McKenzie Head overlook is .25 miles up a trail listed moderate to difficult (steep uphill). Across the road from the parking lot is a 1.5 (3 mile round trip) trail to North Head marked moderate to difficult. Steps, mud and roots. At the top a .25 mile easy gravel road continues to a lighthouse. Beautiful area and many other shorter trails in the park area. Highly recommend.
Loved this area. Spent most of the day checking it out. Bike trails, hiking, 2 light houses. Interpretive center. History of the fort/battery. We need to come back with the kid and dogs. Beautiful day to hike. Lots of different types of mushrooms.
We don't usually car camp, but I have to say we liked this place so much we stayed an extra night to finish all the trails in the area. Could not believe how many salamandars there were. Had to be very careful where we stepped. Awesome woodfire pizza at the store next to the entrance. Definitely coming back again in April. The park hasn't fully opened so you are able to really appreciate the place without crowds.
