Did this pretty much as Tom M described. Trail seemed to go on forever. Hike up until you think you can't go up anymore then keep going up. Same thing on the way down too. There were no viewpoints on the trails we took, which was a bummer. Also did this on one of the hottest days of the summer in mid-July, which also didn't help. Did have a dip in one of the swimming holes though. We were hoping for more scenery out of this hike and didn't get it, which is why I only gave it a 2.
Did this hike from the lower Old Rag parking lot, up the Nicholson Hollow trail, clockwise to the Indian Run trail and then descending along Nicholson Hollow trail back to the parking lot. It ends up being about 10miles. Nice hike. Nothing extraordinary. Pretty vistas during the winter due to lack of leaves on the trees. It may be a little more gradual climb going counterclockwise. From the intersection of Nicholson Hollow and Corbin Mt trail it was a climb from appx 1000 to appx 3200 ft. Leveled off in places and then descended pretty constantly from the Indian Run trail back to the parking lot. Good workout.
Decent hike. Went on a warm [for January] day of 55. Started from the parking lot between mile post 37/38 and followed the trail down. There were only two trail runners, who passed me, on their run down. Took a few shots of the cabins at the base of the trail then followed the loop back up to Skyline Drive. Passed quite a few folks who had fishing poles going down to the cabin area. The trail back up is a moderate incline. A pretty decent workout.
