Rather boring trail with lots of ups and downs. Might be better in late spring but August brought few flowers or fungi. Lots of mud and lots of hikers moving quickly to other points. Not much in the way of views.

Spruce Peak is found on a spur off of the Long Trail/Appalachian Trail about two miles south of the VAST trail access parking lot on state road 30/11, about 5 miles east of Manchester Vermont.

The Long Trail/AT is easy to follow as the trail is well worn and well marked with white blazes. There are several streams on the path that were all easy to cross but might be more difficult after a heavy rain.

The trail spur to Spruce Peak is marked only with a small wooden sign that is facing south towards hikers travelling north. If you started in the trail parking lot on 30/11 and are travelling south then it is very easy to miss the sign. The trail itself to Spruce Peak becomes less obvious once you approach the rocks but you can always just make your own path to the top of the rocks. The view is not as great as it used to be, at least in the summer, because the trees branches block a lot of the view.

Be aware that the trail head is across the street from the parking lot so you will have to cross over state road 30/11, which is a fairly busy four lane road, without a crosswalk or traffic light. This could be challenging with children.
