Lost Maples Flats Outs & Back is a 5.9 mile out and back trail located near Vanderpool, Texas and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Flat trail--West Trail to Pond & East Trail to The Grotto The route begins by walking back to picnic ground entrance, crossing Can Creek where it flows into the Sabinal River, then going up Can Creek to the dam and "The Pond", reverse direction at The Pond and backtrack to the picnic ground startpoint. Then continue on to the East Trail trailhead and follow West Trail, including Maples Trail, to "The Grotto". At The Grotto, reverse direction and backtrack to the picnic ground startpoint. This park is beloved for its red and yellow fall foliage, owed mainly to its "lost" biota of Uvalde bigtooth maples, & for its birding, featuring the black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler, but it can be crowded in the fall and access may even become limited. Site of annual volksmarch and daily YRE walk.
Despite the rain (and almost all of the maple leaves being on the ground) it was an enjoyable hike. The East trail was a bit more of a challenge with the water running down the trail. Monkey rock was well worth visiting. Looking forward to going back in the Spring to see all the new life blooming.
