NOTE: You must get to the trailhead at Campsite 90 on the Eagle Creek embayment to start this hike. That requires hiking 5.5 miles from Fontana Dam or taking a boat shuttle across Fontana Lake. Call Fontina Marina at (828) 498-2129 to make reservations. A key consideration is the many creek crossings. In all but the lowest water, most of them must be waded. In high water they can be dangerous or impassable. Generally, winter is not a good time to make this trip, but summer is ideal. The water is lower and getting your feet wet is not a problem. The last part of Eagle Creek Trail is a tough climb and most of Jenkins Ridge Trail is a brutal descent that's hard on the knees.
