Dog Hole Trail is a 2.2 mile out and back trail located near Tracy City, Tennessee. The trail is rated as moderate and primarily used for hiking.
The majority of this trail is flat as it runs along the ridge before diving down into the gorge towards the creek. Nice hike to Raven's Point Overlook. This trail connects to a portion of the Fiery Gizzard and is a nice relief if you take the Gizzard to Raven's Point.
A nice day hike up to Raven's Point. Numerous small waterfalls along the way.
I recommend taking Dog Hole as a spur out to Ravens Point, and then take the main Fiery Gizzard trail back to the trailhead. It is a more forgiving route - the very beginning is steep and a bit slippery if it has rained recently, so take your time. It is more flat, there is a very short spur to Yellow Pine Falls and a couple of nice overlooks. You will cross 3 small streams, I use the last one for water before camping at Ravens.
I have a couple of infected fingers, so I could not dig up some broken glass, but as you start the ascent past the large rock wall, there is a downed tree that has been sawed - a fair amount of broken glass. So if you pass by, bring a bag and pick it up?
A much needed respite after foot crunching over the sea of rocks along the Gizzard. IAnd like many have said, a good way to return to the parking lot if you need to move quickly. If you want to go to Ravens Point, this is the easier way for sure.
We use dog hole as a return route to make a loop after climbing out of gizzard cove. Awesome overlooks. Nice and flat. Which you need after that climb.
Dog Hole Trail branches from Fiery Gizzard south of the Grundy Forest trailhead. You can take dog hole to the top of the ridge and from there have an easy and scenic walk to Ravens Point, bypassing the waterside path of the Gizzard which is far more difficult. The climb to the ridge is initially steep, and ice covered in some weather as it was for us recently, which makes for treacherous footing. Don't be discouraged though, as this trail is worth the brief climb, and is easier than the climb at the southern end from the Gizzard. Ravens Point offers panoramic vistas as well.
This trail is essentially an alternate route over part of Fiery Gizzard's route. It's a little shorter than staying on the main trail, a little easier, and has quite a few fantastic overlooks! Highly recommended.
Used this trail to head back to Grundy after taking the Fiery Gizzard up to Raven Point. There are a couple of great overlooks on this trail. It's much easier than Fiery Gizzard too.
