Beautiful scenery and a stroll through farmland.

Also, tried to update this trail. the TN91 trailhead is actually considered Mountain City right at the Carter/Johnson county line. Parking lot sign says Cross Mountain trail, which is .5 miles but also part of the AT. Cross 91 and enter the farm (lots of free roaming cows, keep your dogs leashed and close!) and follow the white blazes at the end of the gravel trail. Or cross Cross Mountain road and follow the AT through Butler to Watauga dam. Highly recommend both!

Started at TN91 at Cross Mtn. Nice walk through the farm, beautiful view of Shady Valley, was followed by a cow as we passed through the pasture. The Double Springs shelter was a mess, disappointing. Look forward to doing this again as the leaves start to change.

This is a nice trail for a quick hike or (my favorite way) to end a trip down trail 44 across Holston Mt.

Did this area as part of a AT section hike with my wife, Cross Mtn down to Laurel Fork falls. Lots of ridge walking, plenty of water sources, but few vistas in summer with leaves full. I enjoy this section more in late fall.

Did this trip, but sobo, from low gap to 91. Doing it this way gives a goal to keep you going. Crossing through the old farm at the end is a great way to renew the spirit after all the climbing from low gap, as it is beautiful.

Made this trip September of 2010 with my friend Doug. It was our first AT hike, so we were very excited. Saw several deer up close as we made the trip from North to South and did not see one person on the trail unil 1 mile from TN 91. The leaves had not started turning and it was pretty hot. Lots of water at all of the streams and the grade was mostly downhill after a couple of short climbs from Low Gap. We were pretty disappointed in the condition of the shelter at Double Springs. Lots of toilet paper and trash on the ground, but the water supply was super with a flowing pipe above ground level just below the shelter. Plenty of really nice campsites along the way for several tents. There was not much parking at the Low Gap site, but plenty at the TN91 location.
