The trail follows the creek, past the site of the old mill dam and on to a popular rock climbing area called the South Wall. The trail then ascends a set of stairs and steps through the middle of a large fracture in the rock giving a close-up view of the quartzite cliffs and dramatic landscape.
I'm a beginning hiker. . . And mostly interested in hiking as a family activity. We had a blast on this trail! Palisades State Park is a lot of fun to crawl around in.
Although this is a trail in the smallest State Park in South Dakota it is a diamond. the Quartzite rock formations draw rock climbers from around the region. This is a great place to hang out for an afternoon, watch the river for Kingfishers and other birds, watch climbers. Very family friendly. Best to go in Spring, Summer or Fall. I'm rating it a 4 for it's beauty but not a 5 because it's short.
This is a short trail used by climbers. It runs along the Split Rock Creek and below the cliffs. This is a very scenic park and a great place to go rock climbing .
Did the trail in the winter. Very short trail, only rated 3 stars because of the views of the river and rock formations.
