Rail trail west from Saltsburg needs a lot of work (5 miles). The mile of trail through Saltsburg is fine surface trail and freatured a number of interpretive signs about live in this important canal an rail town when the salt wells drove the economy. North Park, featuring the location of Lock #8 of the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal is on the National Register of Historic Places. North of the bridge over Blacklegs creek, however, the trail is undeveloped. Puddles, ruts, ditches and the like are for the next mile. After that, the trail runs along abandoned rail and so isn't too bad. Then, after the Avonmore Rail Loading Yard, it's is a paved private road. While this section of trail is in some of its earliest stages, long term hopes are to connect to the Roaring Run Trail and then beyond all the way to the Allegheny River 20 miles downstream. For now, though, this needs a lot of work.

This is a nice ride. Plenty of parking at the trail head. This trail extends with some serious climbing and is much more difficult.
