South Loop Thunder Swamp Trail - Day 1 is a 5.9 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Solitude, Swamps, Heavy deciduous forest, blueberries, raspberries The Thunder Swamp Trail system provides over 40 miles of marked trails to explore in Pennsylvania's Delaware State Forest. The map I posted shows the route taken on the first day of a two-day backpacking trip. The first day's route is marked in yellow, the second day's route is marked in blue, and side trails are marked in red. True to its name, the Thunder Swamp Trail traverses some of the wettest terrain north of the Bayou. This fact, combined with the extremely rocky soil, makes good, sturdy boots an appropriate choice of footwear. If you plan on making this trip in summer, I would suggest wearing long pants, as mosquitoes, black flies and deer ticks abound. By early July, the blueberry bushes have already begun yielding abundant fruit. Although the scenery is nothing spectacular, the heavy deciduous woods and sparsely used trail created a feeling of peaceful solitude sorely needed by this city boy.
